A Musical Nest Out on a Limb

The Roost perches at the Outpost for its fourth season

Hydrophonium: a tuned jar of water fitted with a submerged microphone. Described by its inventor, Danishta Rivero of Voicehandler, as an “electroacoustic percussion instrument,” this unusual device can be played in a number of ways. For example, it can be struck with a mallet, or bubbles can be blown into it through a straw. The resultant sounds are then processed through a variety of electronic effects.

Flyer on the Wall

Non Sequitur Cultural References

I don’t know what homicidal 1989 comedy Weekend at Bernie’s has to do with rock bands Call It Art, Rebilt, My Heart The Hero, Parachute Picnic or Sweet Weapons. Hopefully only this flyer. See them play at the Launchpad (618 Central SW) on Saturday, Aug. 4, starting at 9 p.m. The 21-and-up show is $5. (JCC)

Flashback Fright Fest

Stranger Things Arcade Carnival

Netflix's retro-spooky series "Stranger Things" was the best thing to happen to horror in ages. In celebration of the show's second season, Tractor Brewing and Tricklock Company present Stranger Things Arcade Carnival. Visitors can enjoy snacks from Pop Fizz and Whole Foods, and art from Octopus and Fox. Have your fortune told, test your luck against the Demigorgon and check out the blind date booth. DJ Flo Fader will spin all the best '80s dance hits "all night long" (to quote Lionel Ritchie). At 10pm local theater troupe Tricklock heads to an outdoor circus tent to host the legendary Lizard Lounge, a late-night cabaret filled with bizarre acts. Woven throughout all the flashback fun is a selection of free-to-play classic arcade games and pinball machines, courtesy of Geekon. Tickets are $15 and are available through Eventbrite.
