Music to Your Ears

Best of the Week—Besides the fine events featured in this week's music section, we'd be remiss if we didn't point you in the direction of these weekend wunderkinds. Good luck choosing between them!

Sonic Reducer

The Young Gods Super Ready/Fragmenté · Porcupine Tree Fear of a Blank Planet · Babelshack Return of the Bottomfeeder

Great things to merge in an album: guitars, synth, cymbals, wispy vocals and dance beats. Bad things to merge in an album: English and French. At least, as merged by The Young Gods. What The Young Gods do well in Super Ready/Fragmenté they do really well—the sound is tight, the beats are slick, the mix is vibrant, the French is superb. But their use of English makes me wonder when Bono turned Swiss, acquired a bad accent, started a dance/synth band and subsequently forgot how to write in complete sentences. At least the music is good.

Writer/director/producer Justin Hunt at the American Meth debut in Farmington, N.M.

Spotlight

The Music ofAmerican Meth

Local artists lend their talents to documentary film project

Farmington native Justin Hunt is the brains and guile behind American Meth, a documentary film he wrote, produced and directed. With a gift for storytelling (surely the result of years of hard-knocks experience in television journalism), Hunt attempts with American Meth to shed some light on an inexplicable addiction to a dangerous and faithless drug, methamphetamine. An edgy subject, to say the least.

Hyperactive Music Festival II

If you ask Alison Shaw why she's so driven to do the things she does for local music, she'll look at you with an expression that implies, “Why aren’t you?” With less than a week before Hyperactive Music Festival II, Shaw is busy working out the fine tuning on an event she launched last year in June.

EVENT HORIZON (Tuesday, Mar 7)

Bring a Tissue

Gaby Fuentes • Regulus • Tear Pressure • indie pop, punk

An up and coming local band I have been enjoying listening to is named Tear Pressure. I found out about them when I was wandering the local college campus and saw a flyer for a show they were doing at some apartment complex up on Copper, in the heights, yo. That was a decent show with an excellent barbeque and I felt like Tear Pressure was going to appear on the scene within the year. Now of course, they are playing their dirty and delicious, slithery and subtle no wave at Burt's Tiki Lounge on Monday, March 6, and as usual at Burt's there is no goddamn cover charge. Ever. I hear some daring lo-fi pop credentials being built on tunes from the band's latest recording, the Chill Ass EP—songs like “Quaaludes” and “All Moms Are Weirdos.” that build intensity as they roll through cray melodic and stylistic changes. They'll be opening for math mastermind and CRTTRZ guitarist Gabriel Angel Fuentes and Austin indie taco-rockers Regulus, so be there
