A natural vintage

"I don't like bein' retro for retro's sake," says Reuben Glaser from the loft space/recording studio where he's resting between two legs of his tour. He speaks with an almost Southern lilt that has nothing to do with his Cincinnati habitat. "We been playin' the South, so maybe it stuck," he laughs. "New Mexico is probably the one place in the country that has less of an accent than we do."

Show Up!

Felix Y Los Gatos

Friday the 13th Sur Valle CD release

Felix Peralta is old school; and not in a clichéd, doing-it-because-it’s-cool way. It just is who he is and how he plays. Charlie Parker once said, “Music is your own experience, your own thoughts, your wisdom. If you don’t live it, it won’t come out of your horn.” That's the best way to describe Peralta and how he plays his guitar. Every song is a story, every chord an emotion.

Chromeo Fancy Footwork · The Clientele God Save The Clientele · Eyvind Kang Athlantis

Montreal's Chromeo is back on their second full-length, bumping out another dose of schmaltzy jams. Being new to mine ears, when I first played this album I was sure the cheesy electronica beats and stupid lyrics were a joke. Turns out they're not a joke, but intended to sort of sound like a joke. How post-modern. In any case, the songs are wretched. But would I dance to them after two cocktails? Absolutely—I've danced to much worse.

Searching for Something

¡Mayday! • Demrick • DJ Stigmata • Septicemia Records • rap, hip-hop

I’m not sure that the concept of “genre” is really relevant anymore in the realm of music. The days of “pure” music are long gone, and while this might leave some “old-heads” grumbling over message boards about the loss of “real rap” or “real jazz,” I think that for the most part this is a good thing. The possibilities are more abundant than ever before as artists dip their fingers in any number of genres and traditions. ¡MAYDAY! is one group embracing this diversity in their quest for success, with dual emcees Wrekonize and Bernz backed by a full band as they delve into the worlds of rap, rock, reggae, pop and more. With the industry experience of Tech N9ne and his Strange Music label behind them, the Miami-based group boasts a live show that is fast, fun and furious. As part of their promotion for upcoming album Search Party, the group will be bringing that energy on Wednesday, Aug. 23, to Launchpad, the perfect venue to witness their smooth, quickfire wordplay shine alongside an impressive and eclectic array of instrumentals and some silkily-sung hooks. Tickets for this 13+ show run a meager $13, making this a show that the youngest and oldest of us alike can attend and enjoy.
