Joshua Redman Brings Back East out West

Lyrical saxophonist explores the trio format

Mention Brian Blade’s cymbal crash at 1:46 into “Indian Song,” track No. 4 on saxophonist Joshua Redman’s latest CD, Back East, and Redman waxes euphoric over the moment.

The Thrills Teenager · Mac Lethal 11:11 · Band of Horses Cease To Begin

Embarking on a road trip with an unknown band in your CD player is a gamble. It's advisable to have a back up plan in these situations, unless the album you're about to feed your player is The Thrills' Teenager. The inviting strum of a mandolin accompanied by acoustic guitar and piano immediately welcomes you into the feel of this alt.rock pop album, which is something like finding your favorite childhood teddy bear while cleaning out your parent’s attic. Teenager is familiar with just enough “different” to make it lovable. [AD]

Don’t Let the Party Stop, Just Keep GERUNDING

Gerunding • pop rock

The Sylvan Esso show at the Sunshine Theater is sold out already, which is a mega bummer. But! You can still go to the afterparty, which happens to include a performance by local psych-pop band GERUNDING, who are just as, if not more, cute than Sylvan Esso. Not that it’s a cuteness competition, just saying. It all goes down at the Moonlight Lounge at 11pm on Thursday, March 22. Even if you’re not going to the concert before ... you’re still invited. For ages 21+.
