Ultan and Wolf: Charmed

CD Release

Charmed Twice Over

Bitter Suite 7 haunts the earways

On its second CD, the “twisted folk” duo Charmed—Alicia Ultan and Bambi Wolf—once again take on the darkness and find the light. In 12 original, emotionally powerful songs, Bitter Suite 7 explores love, loss, betrayal, memory’s hauntings, the search for a center, and the promise and sometimes redemptive certainty of love.

Kate Mann Things Look Different When the Sun Goes Down · Evidence The Layover EP · The Pica Beats Beating Back the Claws of the Cold

It’s been a while since Portland-based desert gypsy rocker Kate Mann called New Mexico home, but the Land of Enchantment still swims in her blood. Her latest release remains intimate even as it fills to the brim with acoustic and electric guitar, fiddle, cello, accordion, piano, saw and harmonica. Mann’s sleepy-eyed acoustic ballads sit at one end of the bar, while cello-heavy movers and shakers beg for another shot at the other. Things Look Different is an album that gets its point across with forceful grace. (SM)

EVENT HORIZON (Saturday, Aug 27)

(quiet) Night Out

SuperGiant • Russian Girlfriends • rock, punk • Lilah Rose • pop, electronic • Rueben Krussick

What's better than unplugging from social media? A lot of things, honestly. For example, Low Spirits is hosting an Unplugged Night this coming Saturday, Aug. 27, where musicians who normally rely on electronics (whether that's a MIDI board or guitar) perform, well, unplugged. Local favorites Joel and Jeremy from SuperGiant, Adam Hooks from Russian Girlfriends, Rueben Krussick of WholeHearted and Lilah Rose will be performing. Doors open at 8pm and tickets will be sold for $5 at the door. See? You don't have to get crazy to enjoy less technology in life.
