Answer Me This

How many citizens pack heat in New Mexico? Which schoolyard barb did APD use on war protesters? What drama began unfolding for UNM's football team? How's the economy faring in Santa Fe with a $9.50 minimum wage?

1) Four years ago, the state passed a law allowing people to carry concealed weapons if they went through training. About how many people in the state have those permits today?

a. 70

b. 700

c. 7,000

d. 17,000

2) Police and war protesters near Kirtland Air Force Base exchanged heated words on Saturday. Among them:

a. Demonstrator to officer: "Yo momma's so fat, when she sat on a rainbow, Skittle's fell out."

b. Officer to demonstrator: "Shave your armpits and call me later."

c. Demonstrator to officer: "I eat bacon like ... bacon. Uh ... screw you, pig!"

d. Officer to demonstrator: "Hey, peace really is patriotic. NOT."

3) Three assistant coaches with the Lobo football team are under the scrutiny of the NCAA. The coaches are accused of:

a. Helping students get fake academic credits.

b. Giving unhealthy dietary advice to student athletes.

c. Offering students tips about how to cheat on tests.

d. Making fun of asthmatic players.

4) A preliminary study on the economy in Santa Fe after the minimum wage was raised to $9.50 suggests:

a. Businesses are shutting their doors because they can't afford to pay workers.

b. The city's overall unemployment rate dropped.

c. Fewer positions are available, and it's much harder to get a job.

d. The housing market is booming since more people can afford to own property in the state capital.

1) C. About 7,000 people hold permits to carry concealed weapons. In 2004, only 1,127 had the conceal-carry permit in New Mexico. Now so many people want them, the instructors who run courses required to get permits say they don't have to advertise for clients.

2) B. Members of the Albuquerque Police Department sharpened their playground-style insult skills, trading barbs with protesters about armpit hair and bathing. Protesters, of course, responded in kind. "Get a real job," they told the officers, and "This is real patriotic, hassling a bunch of old hippies." The Kirtland Air Force Base gates have often been the site of similar demonstrations in the past few years, few as jokey as this one.

3) A. Five athletes are said to have gotten college credits without doing any work from Fresno Pacific University. The assistant coaches are under investigation. Only one still works for UNM. If there's merit to the accusations, UNM will administer punishment to the team. The NCAA can add on penalties if the university's aren't stiff enough. Expect investigation results in December.

4) B. The study done by the Bureau of Business and Economic Research at UNM says the higher minimum has overall had a positive effect on Santa Fe, with the unemployment rate falling since the living wage went into effect. One drawback: Organizations that find work for people with disabilities report it's been harder to secure jobs for those workers.
