"All our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours--whereas all the testing says not really."
—Dr. James Watson on Sunday, Oct. 14, referring to his belief that those of African ancestry are inherently less intelligent than those of European descent
Watson, who won the 1962 Nobel Prize for his role in discovering the double helix structure of DNA, later apologized for his comments, saying they had no scientific backing, but did not retract them. The uproar over what he said forced him to resign from his position at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in Long Island. (SM)
