Watson, who won the 1962 Nobel Prize for his role in discovering the double helix structure of DNA, later apologized for his comments, saying they had no scientific backing, but did not retract them. The uproar over what he said forced him to resign from his position at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in Long Island. (SM)
