Fueling the Revolution

Local company shows you how to run your car on H2O

Russell Pickavance's short list of life goals reads something like this: 1) Make an affordable, water-powered car. 2) Feed everyone in the world.

First things first.

Pickavance's Santa Fe-based company, Evolution Motion, is one of about a dozen companies to try its hand at making an oxy-hydrogen generator, or Oh-gen, an invention that increases gas mileage. The Oh-gen, which is still on the fringe of the alternative energy market, works by powering existing cars partly through an oxygen and hydrogen mixture instead of just from gasoline.

Here's the technical stuff: According to Evolution Motion's website, "The oxy-hydrogen generator refines water into hydrogen and oxygen on demand, using a small amount of electricity produced by the car it’s attached to. This oxy-hydrogen gas is fed into the air intake of the vehicle, and acts as a supplemental fuel. The hydrogen burns, replacing part of the gasoline, and the oxygen increases overall combustion efficiency, thereby improving both the emissions and fuel economy of the vehicle."

The Oh-gen is 12 inches tall and four inches square and can be installed pretty much anywhere on a car, but is usually placed under the hood. Almost all cars can be outfitted with an Oh-gen, as long as there's enough room in the car. The company's website says Oh-gen owners can expect the $900 device to pay for itself in about a year, on average.

Since there are other companies making oxy-hydrogen generators, what makes Pickavance's one-year-old company different?

"My vision, I think, is what sets us apart," Pickavance says. "I've got the plan on how to get lots of people to sell lots of generators." Thirty-year-old Pickavance wouldn't comment on record about the specifics of his plan, which he said would be off the ground in about six months.

"The energy revolution is the beginning of a whole new world for people," Pickavance says. "The fact is, oil's going to run out and we're going to have to use other forms of energy. That's going to make for some really rad, fun changes in the next decade."

As oil dries up, Pickavance says, companies and individuals will be forced to think of ways to make alternative energy more profitable and affordable. As for his role in this energy revolution, Pickavance plans to be on the front lines of the search for new energy frontiers.

"The world is about to pop," Pickavance says. "I can do things that are good for the world and still profit from them. Once people see that things like oxy-hydrogen power fit inside our economic system, they'll buy into it and things will take off from there. We're in control, so it's just a question of where we want to go."

While Evolution Motion develops their hush-hush business expansion, no Oh-gens will be sold. For more information on the company and to keep tabs on when the generator will again be available for purchase, visit www.evolutionmotion.com.

  • Total scam. Mr. McCormack, don't believe the hype.  [ Thu Dec 20 2007 9:26 AM ]

There is no free lunch. Gasoline runs alternator, alternator runs electrolyzer, added gas burns in engine, each step losing some of the energy as heat. The engine will work, and the O2/H2 added will burn, but it will actually drop your mileage. The less it makes, the less noticeable the effect.

Don't take my word for it. Ask any scientist or engineer, anywhere. Either every single one of us is wrong, or this guy's a huckster. And he's not the only one.

Fun sites to visit, that even most conspiracy theorists believe:

  • I thought this was a head-scratcher, too  [ Thu Dec 20 2007 11:14 AM ]

Yeah, something has been left out, here. The description we see, looks like a free lunch. It can't be that, unless it's a fraud.

I haven't looked into it, but I _suspect_ the part we're missing, is that the hydrogen is generated (and stored in a tank?) when there's excess power, and burned when more is needed. Just like today's gas-electric hybrid vehicles, but using hydrogen as energy storage, instead of a battery. That would eliminate the need of an electric motor. That would be pretty nifty, but I'm just speculating.

  • Looks suspicious  [ Thu Dec 20 2007 11:23 AM ]

I followed the links, read the how-it-works part, and I don't see anything like what I speculated. It looks like they're claiming that adding hydrogen and oxygen magically somehow beefs up the gasoline, resulting in more energy output than what was used to generate the hydrogen.

I wonder how much more energy I'd save, if instead of putting water in to this, I used snake oil.

  • Everything I've heard  [ Thu Dec 20 2007 11:28 AM ]

indicates that it takes more energy to extract hydrogen from water than the hydrogen gives back - so it's a net loss in energy. Is that not the case?

  • More detailed explanation  [ Thu Dec 20 2007 11:55 AM ]

I am absolutely aware, as is Pickavance, that there is quite a bit of skepticism swirling around water-hybrid devices. As the article states, the technology is on the fringe of the new energy market.

On Evolution Motion's website, there is a more detailed explanation of how the Oh-gen works. Pickavance would be the first to tell anyone who asked that he's working with new technology that is far from perfected. Even so, in the models he's sold, he guarantees at least a 20% decrease in fuel usage or your money back. I think one of the benefits of our relatively open-market system, is that, for the most part, if something doesn't work, people will stop buying it. I guess only time will tell if Pickavance's product will be profitable. Here's a link to the more detailed explanation, but I suspect your healthy skepticism will not be decreased by reading it. Thanks so much for your comments!

  • Key phrases from the How It Works page  [ Thu Dec 20 2007 12:07 PM ]

"..a properly engineered device can produce large amounts of Oxyhydrogen gas with very little electricity."

    and

"Compared to an equal measure of gasoline, Hydrogen has 3 times as much energy. Not only is Hydrogen more powerful but it burns quicker."

In other words, the water is separated using a tiny amount of energy, and then recombined to release a huge amount of energy. Or to further paraphrase: it works by magic.

  • dammit  [ Thu Dec 20 2007 5:26 PM ]

I've been thinking about this all day. It just can't work the way Pickavance's web pages describes it. But I keep going back to how ass/u/med it worked, before I read up.

Today's hybrids run the gas engine at its most efficient RPM, and if that extracts more energy than needed to make the car go, then it uses the left-over mechanical energy to run a generator that makes electricity, and stores that in a battery. Then, some time later, you tap the battery to run an electric motor to make the car go.

Two motors. Mechanically complex. Expensive car. Lead battery to dispose of when you retire the car.

If instead of storing it in a battery, you electrolyze water to generate hydrogen, and store *that*, then you can use the stored energy WITH YOUR EXISTING ENGINE (perhaps with some tweaks).

So what's more complicated/expensive: a hydrogen storage tank (pressurized, I guess), or a battery plus electric motor plus a weird transmission?

Somebody probably already has a patent on it. If not: prior art right here, sucka!
