Il Vicino’s thin-crusted, gourmet-topped pizzas are perennial favorites among Alibi readers, but the big salads are equally popular. Order at the register and a server brings the food to your table, making weekday lunches speedy. The open kitchen gives you something to stare at while you wait. Stop in for a quick lunch or a late afternoon microbrew at one of the patio tables. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

This mother-daughter bakery specializes in special occasion cakes, some boxed lunches and a surprisingly large selection of mini-cupcakes filled with ethereal creams, berries and other unexpected delights. The cupcakes look less than perfect, but everything else is down pat—the flavors and textures are just how we like ’em and among the very best we’ve had. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Brick-oven pizza may have come to us from California, but they do it pretty well here in New Mexico. Well, at Scarpa’s, anyway. The chicken Caesar pizza is genius, with white cream sauce and a salad right on top of the pie. And if the pizzas don’t get you going, check out the homemade pasta and yummy minestrone. Perhaps the best thing on the menu is the torta dessert—a mountain of puff pastry, baked apples and cinnamon ice cream. Open until 10 p.m. weeknights, 11 p.m. weekends. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Il Vicino’s taproom has reopened with a vengeance at its new location. There is now plenty of room (both to sit and park), and you can chow on a sandwich or a big hot pretzel while you sip your Wet Mountain IPA. (Alibi Staff, April 14, 2011)

Located in the Design Center—home to a Pella Windows showroom, a granite company and other decorator/designer products—Rose’s has a very nice open, high ceiling eating area. Rose and Roxanne are friendly and mellow. It's a bit pricey, but the ingredients are fresh and tastily prepared. Excellent chile, and they serve black beans. (Alibi Staff, June 16, 2011)

You can bank on getting good pie here. From plain old cheese to the "super combo"—pepperoni, sliced ham, mushrooms, green peppers, red onions, black olives, beef, pork sausage and Italian sausage—all is well. Amadeo's makes them up to 26 inches across. The subs rate just as high. Toasted rolls, baked locally, are stuffed with your choice of meat (salami, ham, meatballs and so on), cheese and veggies. The meatballs are totally boss. Not too heavy with an almost silky texture, they come drowned in a spicy tomato sauce and smothered in mozzarella cheese. Closed Sunday. In a storefront at The Pavilions at San Mateo, right off of I-40, Bliss is a refreshingly charming sandwich spot with an emphasis on local ingredients and made-from-scratch everything. The green chile Philly makes excellent use of rib eye steak and Wagner Farms green chile. Vegetarians are well cared for with sandwiches like the “Jiminy's criminy” and a veggie burger with heavenly hummus. There are also giant breakfast burritos, soups, salads and daily specials. This small Italian delicatessen is jam-packed with enough imported and domestic meats, cheeses and specialty items to turn any kitchen into an authentic cucina Italiana. At the meat counter you'll find fresh prosciutto, salami, house-made sausage, and a variety of veal, beef and pork cuts. Cheeses run the gamut from humble staples like Parmesan, Pecorino Romano and fresh Mozzarella to fancier formaggio like Fontina, Gorgonzola and Locatelli. Step over to the lunch counter for a quick Italian snack made with ingredients you know are top-notch. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Albuquerque - Nob Hill

3.66 rating (11 votes)
The concept of Bailey’s on the Beach seems to put some people off at first because, naturally, it’s nowhere near the ocean. On the other hand, “Bailey’s on the Taco Bell Parking Lot” doesn’t have the same ring. In any case, a few minutes on the restaurant’s third story deck at sunset will earn Bailey’s the benefit of the doubt. The beach theme finds its way into the dining experience in whimsical ways. The pasta dishes are made of organic, shell-shaped noodles. The seafood stew, a Cabernet bouillabaisse, is chunky and tastes like the sea. Fish tacos bear generous chunks of mahimahi and avocado, and are flanked by a dish of creamy papaya coleslaw. Bailey’s “beach burger” contains caramelized onions, jack cheese and double-roasted green chile on a quality ciabatta bun. The salads are made with feeling. There’s even cold-drip coffee! Fresh, tasty, healthy and inexpensive—we’re sold. (Alibi Staff, December 23, 2010)

Sure, you go in thinking you’ll be good and get a skinny latte, scrambled local egg whites and a side of turkey and green chile sausage, but five minutes later somebody’s saying “milkshake” and the voice is coming from your mouth. This Duke City fixture prides itself on using locally sourced ingredients like eggs and greens. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Satellite serves up coffee (the Best Coffee, according to Best of Burque Restaurants polls) and tea, as well as burritos, sandwiches and pastries. This is a good choice if you’re hungry late (it’s open until at least 10:30 p.m. most nights) or need a quick gift for your beverage-loving friends: We recommend the too-cute travel mugs. Besides having the Best Pizza, according to past Best of Burque Restaurants polls, Dion's also has a wonderful selection of salads (particularly the Greek or any of the “gourmet” salads with microgreens) and sandwiches (the pastrami is especially good). The pizza is made fresh and you can see them rolling and tossing the dough. Dine in or order takeout until 10 p.m. weeknights or 11 p.m. weekends. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Flying Star’s blueberry buttermilk pancakes are a guaranteed silver bullet for your behemoth-sized sweet tooth. They’re friggin’ enormous, fluffy and filling, and at about $2.30 a pop, a little frivolous. But you’re worth the extra pennies, aren’t you, sweetie pie? Throw in a side of green chile turkey sausage and a beautiful North Valley patio, and your crudo is history. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Sharing the Village Shops with Vernon’s—the jazz-filled steakhouse founded by the Calico Café family—Prime is a gourmet sandwich shop that will eventually include a wine boutique. The decor is both rustic and contemporary. On the menu, the focus is meat—especially prime beef. You can buy New Mexico grass-fed steaks by the pound to grill at home, or have lunch and a beer on the spacious patio. (Alibi Staff, September 29, 2011)

2.75 rating (9 votes)
Annie’s is the kind of place we like to take grandpa for an eye-opening brekky or early lunch. There’s always a variety of good soup, from French onion to potato and leek, and hearty sandwiches. If breakfast is what you’re after, grab the blackberry blintzes or a pile of home-fries with eggs and green chile sauce. Sure, you’ll see little old ladies slurping away, but the food is tasty enough to make up for the old-fashioned feel. Closed Sunday and Monday. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)
