Winners of Best Dish Covered in Gravy, Best Chicken-Fried Steak, Best Milkshake/Malt, Best Diner and Best American in recent polls. Step back in time for old-fashioned diner food and atmosphere with a New Mexican twist (incarnate in the hot-and-spicy Frito pie). The 66 Diner dishes up yummy burgers and fries, breakfast plates, and daily specials like chicken pot pie with cream gravy or crispy-fried po’ boys. The real stars in this place, though, are the awesome frozen desserts. They run the gamut from mammoth banana splits to 99-cent teeny-weeny hot fudge sundaes. The milkshakes come in almost any flavor combination you can think of and are some of the creamiest, most lip-smacking concoctions around. (Alibi Staff, October 13, 2010)

Ayurvedic cuisine supposedly works with your body’s natural energies and constitution to create “soul” food that’s on a whole new plane. Winners of Best Vegetarian in our restaurant poll several years running, Annapurna’s food is satisfying but never heavy and, well, you just feel better after you eat there. Try Sunday brunch with spiced gluten-free, vegan pancakes and breakfast quinoa (but you’ll have to live without scrambled eggs, sorry). The shaded courtyard to the side of the restaurant is spectacular. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Look beyond the marketing gimmick of the poor, sweaty guy asphyxiating on the Central median, face concealed behind a sequined Mexican wrestling mask. Either chow down inside the colorful restaurant (try the fresh peanut salsa and horchata ) or have items from its extensive menu delivered directly to your door. Sundays feature a spectacular display of tableside live mariachi music. (Be forewarned: If you know a little Spanish, your interactions with the staff will go much more smoothly.) Open ’til 11 p.m.! Parked on Yale’s prime stretch of UNM territory, Bricklight Dive is tailor-made for the University crowd: a short, inexpensive menu of Italian “street food” (lots of bread-based snacks with toppings; some nice, filling salads) and local beers for just a few bucks. The people-watching on the patio is excellent, if you can can get a spot. From the same folks behind Q/bRgR in Downtown. (Alibi Staff, August 23, 2011)

Brickyard Pizza is known for fast slices and beers on the cheap. It's the only full bar directly across from UNM, making it the prime watering hole for your post-theater and post- or pre-class needs. It also sometimes has live music and, usually, more televised sports than you can handle. The best thing about Brickyard, though, is that it's also the only noncorporate pizza establishment with late-night delivery (until 2:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday and until 1:30 a.m. all other nights) in Burque, which satiates an otherwise unfortunate void. In the front, it's a standard restaurant laid out with a small bar and big window facing the street. Travel a short way through a blacklit hall and enter the kind of divey neighborhood hangout this city needs more of, complete with TVs, a jukebox, a ping-pong table, air hockey and arcade games. Though the entire menu is available no matter where you choose to spend your time, you can't go wrong with the twisty-crust pizza. Caroline the bartender makes the meanest Lemondrops and non-blended Margaritas around. Suck back one of her Bloody Marys, too, which she makes extra spicy with Sriracha rooster sauce. Winner of Best Frozen Desserts in our 2010 Best of Burque Restaurants poll. One of the best reasons to celebrate our long, hot summers, Chillz’ creamy custard is only made better with the addition of crunch, fruit and syrups. Sometimes brain freeze is a good thing. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

We still miss Jack’s, but its copper-ceilinged replacement has been around long enough to become an institution itself. The rambly old building has plenty of dark corners to hide in as you make your way through the extensive beer menu, and if the weather’s nice, an inviting patio area to scarf down a brick-oven cooked pizza in the fresh Spring breeze. 4.66 rating (63 votes)
While The Cube’s presentation is upscale, the portions you’ll get are of standard barbecue proportions, unlikely to send you home hungry. Ribs, chicken, brisket, links and pulled pork are hickory-wood-smoked and prepared with a spice rub (“dry”) or drenched in tangy, smoky, sweet, acidic sauce (“wet”). Both versions are excellent. Hot dog lovers will have plenty to chew on with Chicago dogs, bacon-wrapped Guadalajara dogs and 505 dogs (bacon, avocado and green chile). And with mapley candied yams, mac and cheese, and skin-on fries, the sides at The Cube are hardly side notes. To wash down your meal, there’s a wine and beer list, and a hefty menu of house-made mousses, pies and muffins for dessert. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

DG’s serves inexpensive, satisfying hot and cold sandwiches in a quiet West University neighborhood. The possibilities for a customized ’wich are endless, whether you’re after a six-inch snack or a two-foot torpedo. Pickle spears are free, but you’ve got to ask for them.

Donut Mart is the home of our new favorite, the “golden coconut” cake doughnut. This circle of goodness melts in your mouth, and its toasty coconut coating adds a delightful crunch. The custard-filled Boston cream wins points with tasters, too. The PB & J and buttermilk cake are also popular. (Alibi Staff, October 13, 2011)

A can’t-miss New Mexican spot steeped in lived-in UNM area charm. There are amazing beans, potatoes and, of course, the patio. And some really tasty green chile chicken enchiladas. And live guitar music. And, yum. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

The entirely vegetarian menu here is brief, with tapas-sized Asian dishes like steamed dumplings, cold sesame noodles, egg rolls and absolutely delicious "fried vegetable nuggets." We have no idea what those "fried vegetable nuggets" are made of (textured vegetable protein? gluten?), but they are scrumptious. Each of the little dishes costs only two or three bucks, and two or three dishes will fill you up. Try the combination plate with a boba tea for lunch. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Frontier won Alibi awards last year for Best Value, Late Night, Carne Adovada, Tortillas, Green Chile and Breakfast Burritos. Frontier is pretty much the one restaurant most folks in Albuquerque can agree on. Though we may complain about the crowds, the escalating prices and the lack of real butter, we go back again and again. The food is always perfectly, consistently delicious. Breakfast burritos, sweet rolls, huevos rancheros, green chile stew, fresh-squeezed orange juice: it’s all great. The ambience is strictly cafeteria plus tons of John Wayne art. Don’t miss this place, whatever you do. Now open until 1 a.m. every night. Sorry. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Yes, Golden Pride is technically a fried chicken joint, but it also serves fantastic barbecue and the best damn portable burritos in town. Drive through and order a flock of wings, a rack of ribs and a passel of No. 9 breakfast burritos (with bacon!). It’s all good with beer, by the way.

Gyros is a modern-looking Greek place. None of that cheesy wall-to-wall blue and white paint or brimming flower pots here. Instead, Gyros opts for a kind of metallic sheen. Luckily, the food is just as reasonably priced as the next Greek joint. The souvlaki and gyros are good, but be sure to try the lemon rice and the honey-soaked baklava. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

So many reasons why we love Kai’s: It’s cheap even by cheapskate standards. The service is friendly and the food comes out in a flash. It’s close to the university, and there’s parking in the back. If you’re bored, you can either look at pictures of kung fu heroes all over the walls or check out the action in the open kitchen.

One barbecued eel bowl here will make you want to come down off the ledge. And nothing tastes better after a hectic afternoon than a huge bowl of Hawaiian shave ice covered with fruit syrup. After a successful 20-plus-year run in California, owner Lily Genka offers the UNM area delicious and healthy fare like cold soba noodles with Japanese mountain vegetables, fresh sashimi, baked squid and a bento box lunch so ample, we challenge you to finish the whole thing. Plenty of vegan options, too. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Cute-as-a-button Mint Tulip’s menu reads the way you’d expect in a non-veggie café. There is a Reuben, as well as a BLT. This may seem like unusual fare for a vegan restaurant, but of course all of the meat-like items are made from non-animal sources. There’s also ample fuel for your inner sweet tooth and glutton: a grilled Elvis (a sandwich of peanut butter, almond butter, banana and agave), a gelatin-free fluffernutter, and a fully decadent lineup of baked goods and desserts, including some delightful lavender drop cookies. It’s locally sourced and very affordable, too. (Alibi Staff, July 28, 2011)
