3.43 rating (7 votes)
The space has high ceilings that remind us of a ski lodge bar, with an upscale feeling but less colorful sweaters. You'd never know it shares a wall with Uptown Sports Bar. ABQ Brew Pub’s kitchen boasts black cultured mussels in court-bouillon fumé, steaks with Chimayó chile rub and cheesecake with crème de cassis sauce. Ten taps host Sierra Blanca / Rio Grande offerings, available in 10-, 16-, or 22-ounce glasses ($3.25, $4 and $5.50). Four-ounce samplers go for $1 each. All the sizes fit nicely on high-tech, built-in coasters that keep drinks frosty. (Alibi Staff, December 23, 2010)

A New Mexico tradition since 1952! For an award-winning (for both Best Burger and Best French Fries), quick burger or chili dog, fresh fries and fountain favorites that hit the spot for just a pocketful of change, it’s got to be Blake’s. Countless counters are scattered throughout the city, and each one is a model of efficiency and cleanliness. Why look any further? They’re easy to spot from afar—just keep an eye out for the giant Asian Uncle Sam sign. This one has a drive through, even. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

1.57 rating (68 votes)
Cake Fetish is a boutique bakery with a singular passion for cupcakes (it won Best Cupcakes in the 2010 Best of Burque Restaurants poll). Not only that, the shop makes teeny, tiny cupcakes—dense, two-bite buttons of cake, so you can comfortably troll through 30 flavor concepts like "Velvet Elvis," red-velvet cake with cream cheese icing; or the minty, dark-chocolate grasshopper, mounded with fluffy French buttercream. This is one instance where you can have your cake and eat it, too. Regular-sized cupcakes also available. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

This place is a dive. And we mean that in a good way—unpretentious and broken-in like a favorite pair of scuffed boots. The cozily dim restaurant (front) and bar (back) are separated by a kitchen that services both rooms with Charlie’s signature New Mexican-American fare. Roll up your sleeves for delicious sour cream-chicken enchiladas and enormous, juicy burgers; then order a round of Bud Light for your blue-collar buddies. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

We love this strange little place with aggressively retro décor, like super ’70s wood paneling. Cool. Plus, they serve New York deli stuff like bagels with lox and cream cheese, and a club with dill Havarti on rye bread. Our favorite option is the salad trio—you get to pick from Caesar, Greek, apple Waldorf, pasta, potato, fruit, tuna, chicken or egg salads, and it comes with a roll. Wash it down with a Dr. Brown's soda. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Proprietor/Chef Glenn Williams, formerly of the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center’s Pueblo Harvest Café and Bakery, uses sustainable planning from the tablecloths (no throwaway paper) to the local produce. Shopping daily keeps waste to a minimum and ingredients are fresh. The menu's big flavors are expressed through braises, sauces, salsas and garnishes from the world over. Don’t be surprised to find a roasted corn salsa sharing the plate with beurre blanc or a boneless Idaho rainbow trout stuffed with crab and wrapped in bacon. But be warned: While the menu may sound familiar, the chef plays fast and loose with his interpretation of some dishes such as the Osso buco made with turkey and garnished with chimichurri. The menu is a work in progress as new ingredients and new ideas emerge. Recent decor incorporates an artistic interpretation of a running stream on the floor where there used to be a row of booths, a spacious arrangement that allows for larger parties at table seating. Have you ever felt truly complete? If not, skip the bad date on Friday night and go eat at Eloy’s, because it has complete dinners for about $10. You get an entrée, guacamole salad, chips and salsa, sopaipillas, dessert, and tea or coffee, and the family vibe is a welcome change from fakey-sweet chain service. The red chile is hot, the green is hotter and the sweet natilla custard will cool you down quicker than an Otter Pop on the sidewalk. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Stop in at Flying Star for an early-morning fiesta muffin or a quick cup of coffee. You can sit by the magazine rack and eat a fancy salad while reading the online edition of Architecture Today or Rollerblade World . Doesn’t that sound like fun? (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

They share one name, but this is actually two separate dining rooms across a courtyard from each other. Take the kids to the one with the teppan grills; it's livelier. Take your date to the sushi bar and get a booth. Feed each other deep-fried shrimp heads. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Vegetarian Mexican lovers take note: Juan's doesn't make its beans with lard, the chile is meatless, and the meat and vegetarian dishes are all cooked and kept separate. Whether or not your diet is meat-free, check this place out for lunch or dinner anytime you’re Uptown. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Frog legs, frog legs tra la la. This place has got ’em sautéed with sweet basil and peppers and deep-fried with garlic. The refurbished and redecorated Krung Thai is a magical wonderland of bright colors and exotic spices, and the best coconut lemongrass soup this side of East Asia. Savor the green curry, the spicy tilapia and the garlic quail, but make a pit stop at the dessert menu, because a scoop or two of purple taro ice cream is worth the trip.

Get ready to drop some serious dough on this place, but if anything will get you into someone’s pants, it’d be a meal here. This joint is cool, smooth and classy, the foie gras and Kobe beef are tender and delicious and even the mac and cheese is fancy-schmantzy with a sprinkling of shaved black truffles. Have an excellent glass of wine, an order of oysters Marcello and don’t forget to lay on the charm. Your date (and your libido) will thank you for it. Open late—10 p.m. weekdays, 11 p.m. weekends—of course. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)
