You’ll still get the goopy eggs, greasy cheese and meaty red chile, but with a few surprising differences. Notably, they serve whole beans instead of refried, use no lard and make whole-wheat sopaipillas. That’s right—whole-wheat sopaipillas. Which are deep-fried. But, hey, at least they have more fiber. A small but well-rounded menu of hot and cold sandwiches sells for $8 or $9 across the board and gets paired with innovative takes on deli classics (green apple and jicama slaw, for one). Composed salads are simple but luxurious with touches like homemade mozzarella and real tomatoes. Santa Fe’s Señor Murphy Candymakers fashions the little "tamales" out of vanilla fudge, caramel and piñon. Each one gets wrapped up in an itty-bitty corn husk and finished off with a couple of ribbons. All of the goodies here are picture perfect and range from chile creams to fudges, organic chocolates to sugar-free sweets. Cakes and pies, pastries and cookies; who needs the holidays to excuse our oinking out? This little shop has giant meringues, giant elephant ears and, oh yes, giant rum balls. Getting married? Order a cake. Friends over for supper? Pick up a real apple pie. Family staying with you? Under new management, the same customers have been coming to this Heights institution since it opened nearly 40 years ago, opting for huge portions of inexpensive New Mexican food. There’s nothing fancy going on here, and that’s the way they like it. Oh, except the honey is made from the pollen of North Valley wildflowers. But that’s about it for fancy. Tokyo Kitchen serves up generous portions of hearty, mom-and-pop-style food. The menu is much broader than the few items shown on the website. Decorative sushi rolls add variety to sashimi and nigiri sushi (the green chile tempura roll is especially tasty). There’s also a selection of Japanese country cooking, such as fried rice, yakisoba and teriyaki chicken. The plates are packed so full, a takeout container is mandatory.
