Albuquerque NM

Ortega’s bills itself as serving “healthy New Mexican” cuisine. A contradiction in terms, you say? Well, kind of. You’ll still get the goopy eggs, greasy cheese and meaty red chile, but with a few surprising differences. Notably, they serve whole beans instead of refried, use no lard and make whole-wheat sopaipillas. That’s right—whole-wheat sopaipillas. Which are deep-fried. But, hey, at least they have more fiber.

This stylish little cheese and sandwich shop serves smart comfort food that’s blessedly unpretentious. A small but well-rounded menu of hot and cold sandwiches sells for $8 or $9 across the board and gets paired with innovative takes on deli classics (green apple and jicama slaw, for one). Composed salads are simple but luxurious with touches like homemade mozzarella and real tomatoes. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Satellite serves up coffee but also burritos, quiches, desserts and pastries. This is a good choice if you’re hungry late. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Ever had a “caramale”? It’s like a Payday candy bar, only adorable and New Mexican. Santa Fe’s Señor Murphy Candymakers fashions the little "tamales" out of vanilla fudge, caramel and piñon. Each one gets wrapped up in an itty-bitty corn husk and finished off with a couple of ribbons. All of the goodies here are picture perfect and range from chile creams to fudges, organic chocolates to sugar-free sweets. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Cakes and pies, pastries and cookies; who needs the holidays to excuse our oinking out? This little shop has giant meringues, giant elephant ears and, oh yes, giant rum balls. Getting married? Order a cake. Friends over for supper? Pick up a real apple pie. Family staying with you? No baked good is gonna salve that pain, but perhaps an éclair and some quiet time in your closet will get you through. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Taco Sal

Mon-Fri: 11am-8pm Sat: 8am-8pm Closed Sunday (hours can change without notice)
Meals Served: LunchDinner
Cuisine: New Mexican

3.8 rating (10 votes)
Under new management, the same customers have been coming to this Heights institution since it opened nearly 40 years ago, opting for huge portions of inexpensive New Mexican food. There’s nothing fancy going on here, and that’s the way they like it. Oh, except the honey is made from the pollen of North Valley wildflowers. But that’s about it for fancy.

The place is a bit hard to find, but once you’re inside everything about it screams for attention. From the all-caps menu to the irreversibly hot (their words) food, a meal at Thai Cuisine Express is sure to be memorable. Try the pumpkin curry and the guew teaw (Thai style pho) for something really special. (Alibi Staff, July 18, 2013)

Tokyo Kitchen

Meals Served: LunchDinner
Cuisine: Asian, Japanese, Sushi

2 rating (3 votes)
Tokyo Kitchen serves up generous portions of hearty, mom-and-pop-style food. The menu is much broader than the few items shown on the website. Decorative sushi rolls add variety to sashimi and nigiri sushi (the green chile tempura roll is especially tasty). There’s also a selection of Japanese country cooking, such as fried rice, yakisoba and teriyaki chicken. The plates are packed so full, a takeout container is mandatory. Get ready to drop some serious dough on this place, but if anything will get you into someone’s pants, it’d be a meal here. This joint is cool, smooth and classy, the foie gras and Kobe beef are tender and delicious and even the mac and cheese is fancy-schmantzy with a sprinkling of shaved black truffles. Have an excellent glass of wine, an order of oysters Marcello and don’t forget to lay on the charm. Your date (and your libido) will thank you for it. Open late—10 p.m. weekdays, 11 p.m. weekends—of course. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)
