This French/Italian restaurant occupies the end of a strip mall in La Cueva Town Center at Paseo and Wyoming. Surprisingly, organic beef, free-range chicken and wild-caught salmon from the Fish Hugger are standard. The lunch menu is a pared-down version of the dinner menu in smaller, cheaper portions, while dinner includes European classics like beef Wellington and sole meunière. We still get happy thinking about a plate of immense diver scallops in a clarified beurre blanc, flanked with a rainbow of perfectly roasted yellow and purple potatoes. Have a soft spot for crepes? Chez Bob’s, both sweet and savory, could hold their own on the streets of Paris. Seriously. (Alibi Staff, March 29, 2012)

New location! One of you wants pizza, another insists on soup and salad, the third won’t eat anything but pasta. Don’t waste time fighting; just get on over to Tomato Cafe. It’s quick, inexpensive and all-you-can-eat. Those aren’t usually words you’d use to describe genuinely good food but the pizza here is. Super-thin-crusted and topped with things like feta, basil, barbecued chicken and artichoke hearts, it’s a dream come true (except for Chicago-style fans). (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

This used to be the Blue Corn Café and Brewery, but it's been rechristened as Chama River Brewing Company. Either way, the place has a great beer selection, including a bevy of their own brews. The food is approachable American stuff that, coincidentally, goes pretty damn well with beer. And, according to the 2007 BoB Restaurants poll, it even has the Best Bread Basket around. Say yes to yeast. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Something that sets Doc & Eddy’s apart from other sports bars is that no cover charge is extracted on Ultimate Fighting Championship nights. What you will find are pool tables, waitresses who are not dressed like strippers (TDs is across the parking lot if that’s what you’re after—it also airs UFC) and a kitchen staff that takes its job seriously. The Lobo burger is a thing of beauty, with smoked bacon sparring nicely with cheese and green chile. The fries are skin-on, and the legit red chile is medium spiced with the occasional fleck of coriander. Maybe everyone doesn’t know your name, but it’s pleasant and friendly—even to Brock Lesnar fans. (Alibi Staff, December 23, 2010)

Il Vicino’s taproom has reopened with a vengeance at its new location. There is now plenty of room (both to sit and park), and you can chow on a sandwich or a big hot pretzel while you sip your Wet Mountain IPA. (Alibi Staff, April 14, 2011)

Chef Noi Zaintz, formerly of Bangkok Café, opened Jasmine Thai and Sushi House last June in The 25 Way shopping center. With brightly colored walls trimmed in gold and pools of low light, Jasmine has a sort of classed-up opium den feel. There are more than 60 items, plus sushi; the menu gives an equitable amount of attention to appetizers, soups, salads, entrées and an entire page of vegetarian dishes. The service is awesome, and so are the No. 18 (spicy beef yum nuah salad), the fresh spring rolls and the pad Thai. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

This brewery has quite a following, both for the beer and as a “New Mexican soul food” gastropub. The menu offers specialties of Southern-fried po’boys and the delicious marriage of chicken and waffles. It’s just the place to take your corn-bread-and-Frito-pie-craving friends while still getting your craft beer fix. And there’s live music, too. Nexus has bands booked several nights a week. Voted Best Southern Food for 2013. (Alibi Staff, July 12, 2011)

For something a little more out of the ordinary, pay a visit to Pars Cuisine, the Persian restaurant near the Century Rio 24 theater. Vegetarians will appreciate the nonmeat options and meat lovers are sure to love the spicy kabobs. Linger on your floor cushions while belly dancers roam through the dining room. Then head out to the patio for discounted appetizers and sheesha during the hookah happy hour—it’s from 7 to 9 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, and from 8 to 10 p.m. on Saturdays. Pars tied for Best Middle Eastern in the last BoB Restaurants poll. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

3.17 rating (10 votes)
Fast and freshly prepared on-site, Santa Fe Peppers’ menu consists of burritos, tacos, bowls, nachos and quesadillas—though the emphasis is more Mexican than New Mexican. Simply choose your fixins—try smoky chipotle chicken or bistec a la Mexicana —and get it wrapped up. With choices like brown rice, black beans and a variety of flavorful salsas, vegetarians won’t be disappointed, either. Look for soups, coffeee and desserts as the weather gets chilly. Torinos’ is owned by Maxime and Daniela Bouneou (a husband-and-wife team from Nice, France, and Torino, Italy, respectively), and their Northern Italian restaurant is the next best thing to a plane ticket to Occitania’s northeast corner. Everything is made from scratch, and ingredients are sourced as locally as possible. The pappardelle all’Amatriciana — fresh, house-made wide linguine tossed in a light tomato sauce with pecorino , chile, olives and guanciale bacon is a glorious bowl of pasta. In the guilty pleasures department, the foie gras would satisfy the itch of the most jaded addicts. Don’t pass up the spezzatino, a slowly braised beef brisket served with seared polenta cubes. There’s also half-melted mallard duck confit served with cranberry rhubarb compote. Drop in for à la carte breakfast and lunch, or book a table for dinner service—a $36, six-course set menu. Vegetarians and other food restrictions can be accommodated, Maxime says, but it’s best if they call ahead. “Then we can make something special.” (Alibi Staff, February 2, 2011)

Occupying the same space that Japengo once inhabited, True Sushi bears a strong resemblance to its predecessor. The art is the same, and the sushi chefs still watch sports, but this one is actually a branch on the Sushi King family tree. Much of the sushi is on the heavy side, like the “iron monkey roll”—a deep-fried spicy tuna roll topped with baked scallop, crawfish and fish eggs, underneath a mop of bonito shavings. It's tasty, and your date would probably be impressed by your menu prowess if you order one. (Alibi Staff, February 13, 2012)

If you like chicken-fried steak, then you owe it to your belly to eat at Vic’s. A chef friend of ours turned us on to Vic’s, where the “Big Daddy” is a giant buttermilk-battered steak that will make your eyes light up and your stomach say “howdy.” Seriously, some of the best we’ve ever had. The rest of the menu is classic diner fare (meat loaf, liver and onions) with a large selection of sandwiches and New Mexican and Greek dishes. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Weck’s, oh Weck’s, what would we do without your bottomless drinks, your enormous coffee cakes and your sausage and bacon gravy? How we long to return for another “bowl o’ stuff” filled with hashbrowns, carne adovada, red chile and an over-easy egg. How we dream at night of your belly-bustin’ biscuits and gravy for breakfast and lunch. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Besides having the Best Pizza, according to past Best of Burque Restaurants polls, Dion's also has a wonderful selection of salads (particularly the Greek or any of the “gourmet” salads with microgreens) and sandwiches (the pastrami is especially good). The pizza is made fresh and you can see them rolling and tossing the dough. Dine in or order takeout until 10 p.m. weeknights or 11 p.m. weekends. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)
