Occupying the same space that Japengo once inhabited, True Sushi bears a strong resemblance to its predecessor. The art is the same, and the sushi chefs still watch sports, but this one is actually a branch on the Sushi King family tree. Much of the sushi is on the heavy side, like the “iron monkey roll”a deep-fried spicy tuna roll topped with baked scallop, crawfish and fish eggs, underneath a mop of bonito shavings. It's tasty, and your date would probably be impressed by your menu prowess if you order one. (Alibi Staff, February 13, 2012)

If you like chicken-fried steak, then you owe it to your belly to eat at Vic’s. A chef friend of ours turned us on to Vic’s, where the “Big Daddy” is a giant buttermilk-battered steak that will make your eyes light up and your stomach say “howdy.” Seriously, some of the best we’ve ever had. The rest of the menu is classic diner fare (meat loaf, liver and onions) with a large selection of sandwiches and New Mexican and Greek dishes. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Weck’s, oh Weck’s, what would we do without your bottomless drinks, your enormous coffee cakes and your sausage and bacon gravy? How we long to return for another “bowl o’ stuff” filled with hashbrowns, carne adovada, red chile and an over-easy egg. How we dream at night of your belly-bustin’ biscuits and gravy for breakfast and lunch. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

This is a no-frills kind of place, but if you like Vietnamese food and don’t particularly care about atmosphere, you should definitely seek it out. The pho is bolstering and wholesome and the beef tendon is spectacular. From time to time, they’ve even been known to fly in mass quantities of crawfish for your tail eating, head sucking pleasure. Besides having the Best Pizza, according to past Best of Burque Restaurants polls, Dion's also has a wonderful selection of salads (particularly the Greek or any of the “gourmet” salads with microgreens) and sandwiches (the pastrami is especially good). The pizza is made fresh and you can see them rolling and tossing the dough. Dine in or order takeout until 10 p.m. weeknights or 11 p.m. weekends. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Best of Burque 2009 (Best Lesbian Bar): Exhale has live entertainment, a smokin' dance floor, naughty drinks and jalapeño poppers. Outside of a planet with pink clouds and rivers of chocolate, populated solely by lovely lesbian ladies, what more could a girl ask for? (Alibi Staff, December 23, 2010)

You have enough to worry about without the stress of not knowing where your next baked good is going to come from. Have a buttery fruit pastry, a slice of pie or buy a loaf of that nice, spongy white bread to take home and tear off chunks to stuff in your mouth in a secret corner of the kitchen. We won’t tell. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Frozenzone Ice Cream Factory and Hotzone Grill

The gimmick behind Frozenzone’s “scientific” ice cream is that the workers mix your order right in front of you, using Torani syrups for the flavors and liquid nitrogen to showily freeze the liquid into ice cream. It’s certainly a dramatic way to serve up a couple scoops of strawberry-banana. Like many places, you can also add in some crumbled-up candy bars or gummi worms or fresh fruit for a little extra texture. (Alibi Staff, March 26, 2014)

3.17 rating (6 votes)
If it’s salt-of-the-earth, tried-and-true New Mexican favorites you’re after, hit up a Garcia’s in your area. It’s got daily specials, breakfast anytime and even a "gringo menu" that’ll fill you up without depleting your wallet. The huevos rancheros with green chile will leave you licking the plate and contemplating seconds.

Mario’s is great in the afternoon after the lunch crowds and before dinner for any size of meal. The sandwiches, calzones and pizzas are far more substantial. You and the guys just come in from a rousing game of golf? Stop in the afternoon and share Mario’s mega meat pizza or the gumba nachos. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Nearby Theater: Century Rio (See Film Times)

4.04 rating (21 votes)
Thick slices of beef, tender barbecued chicken and unbeatable cornmeal-dusted catfish are just a few of the items that make this a premier restaurant to blow your diet sky-high. But what really pushes this place over the edge are the fantastic side dishes: like addictive fried okra; smoky, salty greens; and tender black-eyed peas, which are prepared with the same reverence and care as the main attractions. We forbid you from leaving without first ordering a slice of superb sweet potato pie or a piping-hot bowl of cherry cobbler à la mode. Aw, what the helljust get both and die happy. If you’re in a hurry, you can order to-go items from a side pickup area. Closed Mondays. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

2.35 rating (59 votes)
Walking into Sadie's is like walking into your rich old New Mexican aunt’s house. The food smells good, the atmosphere is comfortable and it's OK if you get a little loud. Sadie's has a very friendly and casual (yet still professional) staff and huge portions of food. We like to go for dinner with a big group and drink Margaritas. And salsa. (Yes, we drink the salsa. It’s that good here.) (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Vegetarians will want to skip this one. The Steer features an array of very meaty dishes, from a locally raised beef hamburger to fried pork belly niblets dipped in powdered sugar. Oh, there’s a meatless salad or two available, but choosing one in lieu of the beef is tantamount to eating one of the fake burgers at Thai Vegan: pointless and disappointing. So sharpen those canine teeth and dispel any preconceptions you may have about eating light before you head up here. (Alibi Staff, March 12, 2014)

The Corrales classic has expanded to a new location in Albuquerque’s North Valley. Regulars of the original will find the same selection of more than 30 fresh toppings and four types of hand-tossed crusts to choose from here. The patio is great spot for relaxing on a warm summer evening, and a daily pizza buffet is sure to keep your stomach full throughout the week. (Alibi Staff, April 2, 2014)
