Meals Served: LunchDinner
Cuisine: Sushi, Japanese, Thai, Asian

3.81 rating (21 votes)
Sakura Sushi serves fresh, generous sushi (duh), as well as dishes from Thailand and Laos out of a small strip mall on north Wyoming. But if you order one thing, make sure it’s the udon soup. One bowl is big enough for four people. Dip a spoon in and you’ll strike heaps of firm, dense noodles, caramelized meats and crisp-tender vegetables floating in a sweet-and-savory broth. The curries and goyza appetizers are among the menu’s other high notes. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Brick-oven pizza may have come to us from California, but they do it pretty well here in New Mexico. The chicken Caesar pizza is genius, with white cream sauce and a salad right on top of the pie. And if the pizzas don’t get you going, there’s homemade pasta, yummy minestrone and a lineup of excellent beer. Perhaps the best thing on the menu is the torta dessert—a mountain of puff pastry, baked apples and cinnamon ice cream. Dive in with a demitasse of fresh espresso. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

One of you wants pizza, another insists on soup and salad, the third won’t eat anything but pasta. Don’t waste time fighting; just get on over to Tomato Cafe. It’s quick, inexpensive and all-you-can-eat. Those aren’t usually words you’d use to describe genuinely good food but the pizza here is. Super-thin-crusted and topped with things like feta, basil, barbecued chicken and artichoke hearts, it’s a dream come true (except for Chicago-style fans). (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Trombino's Bistro Italiano

Meals Served: LunchDinner
Nearby Theater: Movies 8 (See Film Times)
Cuisine: Italian

3.93 rating (36 votes)
Trombino's Bistro Italiano has been an institution of family-style Italian dining in the Heights for more than 30 years. It houses an impressively fat menu that includes a full bar, espresso drinks and an ample wine list. The service is quicker than a Hollywood marriage, and the waitstaff seems particularly knowledgeable about the food and wines. Gravitate to the more rustic Italian fare—lemon-basil chicken salad, grilled homemade Italian sausage, prosciutto-wrapped asparagus and manicotti are amply portioned and tasty. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

, roast chicken and potatoes, leg of lamb, lentil soup—the menu at Zorba’s rings familiar and no wonder: The family behind Zorba’s is the same that opened the Olympia Café near UNM more than 35 years ago. But here, in the far Northeast Heights, you’ll notice a long, expanded list of dishes, including more seafood and desserts, plus a lot of elbow room and a generous patio. Il Vicino’s taproom has reopened with a vengeance at its new location. There is now plenty of room (both to sit and park), and you can chow on a sandwich or a big hot pretzel while you sip your Wet Mountain IPA. (Alibi Staff, April 14, 2011)

This used to be the Blue Corn Café and Brewery, but it's been rechristened as Chama River Brewing Company. Either way, the place has a great beer selection, including a bevy of their own brews. The food is approachable American stuff that, coincidentally, goes pretty damn well with beer. And, according to the 2007 BoB Restaurants poll, it even has the Best Bread Basket around. Say yes to yeast. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Nearby Theater: Century Rio (See Film Times)

4.09 rating (86 votes)
Something that sets Doc & Eddy’s apart from other sports bars is that no cover charge is extracted on Ultimate Fighting Championship nights. What you will find are pool tables, waitresses who are not dressed like strippers (TDs is across the parking lot if that’s what you’re after—it also airs UFC) and a kitchen staff that takes its job seriously. The Lobo burger is a thing of beauty, with smoked bacon sparring nicely with cheese and green chile. The fries are skin-on, and the legit red chile is medium spiced with the occasional fleck of coriander. Maybe everyone doesn’t know your name, but it’s pleasant and friendly—even to Brock Lesnar fans. (Alibi Staff, December 23, 2010)

The Fox and Hound

4301 The Lane at I-25 (I-25 Corridor)

3.24 rating (33 votes)
At first glance, The Fox and Hound is your typical sports bar, hip-hop music blasting, TVs blaring, and pretty waitresses bustling. But one glance at the extensive menu is all it takes to clue you in that it is a fine restaurant as well. Unlike the usual fried piece of beer sponge that you get at most sports bars, the menu offers more elegant dishes like blackened mahi-mahi. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

4.07 rating (102 votes)
The focus at Nexus is on balanced, drinkable beers that don’t smash customers in the mouth by a hop assault. That being said, Nexus beat out stalwart area breweries at the 2011 NM IPA Challenge. There are nine styles featured on tap, including standouts IPA, ESB, cream and Belgian white. The brewery is attracting quite a following, both for the beer and as a “New Mexican soul food” gastropub. The menu offers specialties of Southern-fried po’boys and the delicious marriage of chicken and waffles. It’s just the place to take your corn-bread-and-Frito-pie-craving friends while still getting your craft beer fix. And there’s live music, too. Nexus has bands booked several nights a week. Wrung out from playing with the kiddos at the water park in Hotel Cascada? Head over to Altitude, a sports-themed hotel bar with sandwiches, salads and pizza. If lots of TVs with sports are what you’re looking for, this is the place. (Alibi Staff, December 23, 2010)

Bosque has expanded its robust brew selection to a new taproom in the Nob Hill/University area. This location offers food and a sunny patio. The happy hour menu is a must, and the sandwiches are pretty great all around, especially the caprese and the Italian. (Alibi Staff, August 5, 2015)

The historic building at the corner of Central and Carlisle yields a spacious dining room with booths, tables, free Wi-Fi and dog-friendly patios. Inside, the Zeng family (Chow’s) have retained their focus on quality ingredients and many traditional family recipes, but with a twist: The menu is aimed at folks who want a fast meal in a comfortable atmosphere. Prices are moderate. Meals are ordered at the cashier, then delivered to the tables within minutes. Dishes are generously portioned for individuals rather than family-style. The menu draws freely from many Asian cultures with the emphasis on Chinese. Try the Mongolian noodles or coffee chicken. (Alibi Staff, September 1, 2011)

Sure, you go in thinking you’ll be good and get a skinny latte, scrambled local egg whites and a side of turkey and green chile sausage, but five minutes later somebody’s saying “milkshake” and the voice is coming from your mouth. This Duke City fixture prides itself on using locally sourced ingredients like eggs and greens and offers free coffee refills. Beware for the irresistible carrot cake. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Gecko’s has a killer patio in a corner of Nob Hill that’s perfect for people-watching. Set directly between La Montañita Co-op and Scalo, you’ll be sure to bump into folks you know as you’re sipping a cocktail and enjoying tidbits from the affordably priced tapas menu. On Mondays the wings are 50 cents each and Wednesday after 6pm you can get a cheeseburger for $5.50. Watch some sports, eat a burger and enjoy a seasonal ale. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Il Vicino’s thin-crusted, gourmet-topped pizzas are perennial favorites among Alibi readers, but the big salads are equally popular. Order at the register, and a server brings the food to your table, making weekday lunches speedy. The open kitchen gives you something to stare at while you wait. Stop in for a quick lunch or a late afternoon microbrew at one of the sidewalk tables.

Kasey’s is part steakhouse, part patio dining, but it’s all good. The steaks are cooked perfectly, the view from the porch is peaceful and quiet, and the service is attentive and friendly. The fact that it’s housed in a kitschy imitation barn only adds to the charm. Open for Sunday brunch! Try their cinnamon roll French toast. (Alibi Staff, February 6, 2015)
