We still miss Jack’s, but its copper-ceilinged replacement has been around long enough to become an institution itself. The rambly old building has plenty of dark corners to hide in as you make your way through the extensive beer menu, and if the weather’s nice, an inviting patio area to scarf down a brick-oven cooked pizza in the fresh Spring breeze. The Cube BBQ

1520 Central Ave SE (University)
Albuquerque NM

4.65 rating (70 votes)
While The Cube’s presentation is upscale, the portions you’ll get are of standard barbecue proportions, unlikely to send you home hungry. Ribs, chicken, brisket, links and pulled pork are hickory-wood-smoked and prepared with a spice rub (“dry”) or drenched in tangy, smoky, sweet, acidic sauce (“wet”). Both versions are excellent. Hot dog lovers will have plenty to chew on with Chicago dogs, bacon-wrapped Guadalajara dogs and 505 dogs (bacon, avocado and green chile). And with mapley candied yams, mac and cheese and skin-on fries, the sides at The Cube are hardly side notes. To wash down your meal, there’s a wine and beer list and a hefty menu of house-made mousses, pies and muffins for dessert. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

O'Niell's Pub is back—and serves food until midnight on weekdays! A few years after being ousted from its nearly decade-long home in Nob Hill, O'Niell's Pub has migrated east up Central and reopened in a new (but reassuringly familiar) space. All the old standouts like fish and chips and the “Burger in Paradise” are still here and as good as they ever were. Tractor Brewing's O'Niell's Irish Red is a perfectly balanced beer drunk by itself or with everything from chicken wings to chocolate cake. They're comforting, a little cheeky and unapologetically Irish-American. Just like O'Niell's Pub. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

2.91 rating (11 votes)
The space has high ceilings that remind us of a ski lodge bar, with an upscale feeling but less colorful sweaters. You'd never know it shares a wall with Uptown Sports Bar. ABQ Brew Pub’s kitchen boasts black cultured mussels in court-bouillon fumé, steaks with Chimayó chile rub and cheesecake with crème de cassis sauce. Ten taps host Sierra Blanca / Rio Grande offerings, available in 10-, 16-, or 22-ounce glasses ($3.25, $4 and $5.50). Four-ounce samplers go for $1 each. All the sizes fit nicely on high-tech, built-in coasters that keep drinks frosty. (Alibi Staff, December 23, 2010)

Stop in at Flying Star for an early-morning fiesta muffin or a quick cup of coffee. You can sit by the magazine rack and eat a fancy salad while reading the online edition of Architecture Today or Rollerblade World . Doesn’t that sound like fun? (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Il Vicino’s thin-crusted, gourmet-topped pizzas are perennial favorites among Alibi readers, but the big salads are equally popular. Order at the register and a server brings the food to your table, making weekday lunches speedy. The open kitchen gives you something to stare at while you wait. Stop in for a quick lunch or a late afternoon microbrew on the patio.

Winner of Best Casual Dining, Best Veggie Burger, Best Toast, Best Healthy Breakfast and Best Desserts in our 2008 restaurant poll. Sure, you go in thinking you’ll be good and get a skinny latte, scrambled egg whites and a side of turkey and green chile sausage, but five minutes later somebody’s saying “eclair” and the voice is coming from your mouth. But, boy, do they taste good. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Fritz Allen opened the Corrales Bistro Brewery five years ago next door to his Hanselmann Pottery shop in the Corrales Artisan Center. The menu is full of inventive appetizers, salads, wraps, sandwiches and burgers. Roasted garlic and feta bread dippers are replete with crumbled feta, olive tapenade, balsamic dipping sauce and toasted pita. Hand-cut fries and an assortment of sides complete the mix, with good brews to wash it all down. Stop by for the almost-daily live music and you’ll feel right at home. From the same folks behind Turtle Mountain, Fat Squirrel is an English-style pub and full-service restaurant in the heart of Rio Rancho. Featuring beyond-flavorful American fare and some traditional favorites from across the pond (corned beef 'n' cabbage year-round anyone?), Fat Squirrel's menu is as vast as its extensive wine and beer selection. The intensely juicy burger, which you can customize to your liking, is one of the best in town. Generous portions and reasonable prices, too. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Albuquerque - University

3.21 rating (8 votes)
Parked on Harvard’s prime stretch of UNM territory, Bricklight Dive is tailor-made for the University crowd: a short, inexpensive menu of Italian “street food” (lots of bread-based snacks with toppings; some nice, filling salads) and local beers for just a few bucks. The people-watching on the patio is excellent, if you can can get a spot. From the same folks behind Q Burger in Downtown. (Alibi Staff, August 23, 2011)

Get ready to drop some serious dough on this place, but if anything will get you into someone’s pants, it’d be a meal here. This joint is cool, smooth and classy, the foie gras and Kobe beef are tender and delicious and even the mac and cheese is fancy-schmantzy with a sprinkling of shaved black truffles. Have an excellent glass of wine, an order of oysters Marcello and don’t forget to lay on the charm. Your date (and your libido) will thank you for it. Open late—10 p.m. weekdays, 11 p.m. weekends—of course. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Cedar Crest

2 rating (1 vote)
For a rustic bit of down-home in the East Mountains, look no further than this smoky meat joint. Rib’s prides itself on the hickory wood it gets from Missouri and East Texas and then uses to smoke pork, beef and chicken for 16 hours. The taste the process imparts is distinctive, and distinctively good. Voted Best Restaurant in the East Mountains in our 2013 reader poll. (Alibi Staff, October 15, 2013)

Some folks will tell you barbecue is a difficult thing to screw up. Not true. That’s the reason your own barbecue isn't as good as the stuff at Ribs. The portions are large, the grub has a good, smoky essence to it, and there's plenty to choose from. An attached full bar means you can slurp down a margarita in between messy bites.

They take beer seriously here, and Turtle Mountain is one of the few places west of the river where you'll find house-brewed beer. Don't leave without trying the thin-crusted pizzas or a calzone. Oh, and order some root beer for the kids—that's made here too.
