Albuquerque - Downtown

Slate Street Café

515 Slate NW (Downtown)
Albuquerque NM
(505) 243-2210
www.slatestreetcafe.com
Mon-Fri 7:30am-10pm Sat-Sun 9am-10pm Closed Sunday (hours can change without notice)
Meals Served: BreakfastBrunchLunchDinner

3.84 rating (37 votes)
Modeled after a New York loft, Slate Street’s wine bar has an ultra-hip, modern, minimalist feel. This wine list is rhythmic, flowing and poetic, and it’s the most pleasurable to read and easiest to comprehend in Albuquerque. The wines are listed by style—“just a little sweet,” “ABC: Anything But Chardonnay” or “sexy, elegant, austere”—not varietal or region. Demystifying the label like this makes it easy for patrons to pair wine and food. The listings are simple, but not simplistic. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Sushi Hana

521 Central Ave NW (Downtown)
Albuquerque NM
(505) 842-8700
Mon-Fri: 11:30am-2:30pm, 4-9pm Sat: noon-9:30pm Closed Sunday (hours can change without notice)
Meals Served: LunchDinner

3.95 rating (11 votes)
Downtown’s circle of Asian restaurants widens with Sushi Hana, a straight-shooting sushi joint with some Korean influences (it’s from the former owner of Yen Ching). Small and boldly decked in red and black, you’ll find affordable, familiar rolls in a contemporary atmosphere. Great for a quick lunch or a half-price sushi happy-hour trip (served from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. weekdays). (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Taquería Mexico

415 Lomas NE (Downtown)
Albuquerque NM
(505) 242-3445
www.taqueriamexicoabq.com/i...
Mon-Sat: 7am-7pm Closed Sunday (hours can change without notice)
Meals Served: BreakfastLunchDinner

4.88 rating (30 votes)
This brightly colored taco shop is always busy. Despite the constant stream of hard hats, auto mechanics and high-heeled office workers, Taquería Mexico somehow stays spotlessly clean. And the food is great! Their tortas come on big, hot rolls, stuffed with your choice of meats (try the asada or desebrada ), lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise and avocado. The big, juicy burgers are fantastic, as are the burritos, the caldo de res and the soft corn tortilla tacos (of course). (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Teriyaki Kitchen

508 Central Ave SW (Downtown)
Albuquerque NM
(505) 766-9405
Mon-Fri: 10am-4pm (hours can change without notice)
Meals Served: Lunch
Cuisine: Japanese, Asian

4.1 rating (6 votes)
Mom runs the cash register and Pop hustles in the kitchen, making this place seem friendlier and more authentic than its competitor, Teriyaki Chicken Bowl. They also offer brown rice and let you pay a little more for extra broccoli instead of forcing you to give up your rice. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Thai Crystal

109 Gold SW (Downtown)
Albuquerque NM
(505) 244-3344
Mon-Thurs: 11:30am-9:30pm Fri-Sat: 10:30am-11pm Sun: 5-9:30pm (hours can change without notice)
Meals Served: LunchDinner
Cuisine: Thai, Asian

3.24 rating (25 votes)
Located on the back side of the Century 14 Downtown theater complex, Thai Crystal is an obvious choice for a dinner-and-a-movie date. Our favorite dishes include big noodles with soy sauce (which sounds less exciting than it is) and the wide array of soups that arrive in a tall, steaming pot. Then cool yourself down with a Thai iced tea. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Tucanos

110 Central Ave SW (Downtown)
Albuquerque NM
(505) 246-9900
www.tucanos.com
Mon-Thu: 11am-10pm Fri-Sat: 11am-11pm Sun: 11am-9pm (hours can change without notice)
Meals Served: BrunchLunchDinnerOpen Late

3.57 rating (28 votes)
Meat, meat, meat. All-you-can-eat meat. And then there's the salad bar. This joint’s got more dead meat than you can shake a chunk of meat on a stick at. From the kill to the grill, Tucanos makes all your dreams come true. That is, if you dream about meaty hunks of marinated flesh, sliced right at your table. This lively, busy and fun Brazilian-themed restaurant next to the Century 14 movie theater is open late. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Weck’s

2039 Fourth Street NW (Downtown)
Albuquerque NM
(505) 242-1226
wecksinc.com/index.html
Mon-Sun: 6:30am-2pm (hours can change without notice)
Meals Served: BreakfastBrunchLunch

2.45 rating (20 votes)
Weck’s, oh Weck’s, where have you been? Or, rather, where have we been? Until recently, we had not discovered your bottomless drinks, your enormous coffee cakes and your sausage and bacon gravy? How we long to return for another “bowl o’ stuff” filled with hash browns, carne adovada, red chile and an over-easy egg. How we dream at night of your belly-bustin’ biscuits and gravy. How stupid we were to have ignored you for so long!

Weekdays

415 Silver Ave SW (Downtown)
Albuquerque NM
(505) 842-8455
Mon-Fri: 7am-2pm Closed Weekends (hours can change without notice)
Meals Served: BreakfastLunch

3.17 rating (6 votes)
This bright and colorful café caters primarily to Downtown office workers (Weekdays—get it?). We like that it has substantial salads and New Mexican fare to choose from that hit the spot. The selection of housemade baked goods is huge and very tempting. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Zohra

20 First Plaza NW (Downtown)
Suite 246
Albuquerque NM
(505) 247-2323
www.zohraabq.com
Mon-Fri: 7:30am-5:30pm Sat: 8am-3pm Sunday: Please call for hours (hours can change without notice)
Meals Served: BreakfastLunchOpen Late

4.63 rating (19 votes)
Open only for breakfast and lunch, Zohra's caters to the 9-to-5 crowd with a little bit of everything a Downtown diner could possibly want: Afghani foods, American standbys, even Indian tacos. But stick with the Middle Eastern stuff, including a number of vegetarian choices that come à la carte or as a meal. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Albuquerque - Fairgrounds

Blake’s Lotaburger

7520 Lomas NE (Fairgrounds)
Albuquerque NM
(505) 265-3030
www.lotaburger.com
Mon-Sun: 7am-10pm (hours can change without notice)
Meals Served: BreakfastLunchDinner
Cuisine: American

2.63 rating (8 votes)
A New Mexico tradition since 1952! For an award-winning (for both Best Burger and Best French Fries), quick burger or chili dog, fresh fries and fountain favorites that hit the spot for just a pocketful of change, it’s got to be Blake’s. Countless counters are scattered throughout the city, and each one is a model of efficiency and cleanliness. Why look any further? They’re easy to spot from afar—just keep an eye out for the giant Asian Uncle Sam sign. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Café Da Lat

5615 Central Ave NE (Fairgrounds)
Albuquerque NM
(505) 266-5559
Mon-Sat: 10:30am-9pm Closed Sunday (hours can change without notice)
Meals Served: LunchDinner
Cuisine: Vietnamese, Asian

3.07 rating (67 votes)
Consistently one of the best Vietnamese joints in town and one of the few spots that whip up durian-fruit shakes. Da Lat does a magnificent breaded frog leg appetizer. The crispy golden legs are scrumptious dipped in Da Lat's salty, tangy nuoc cham sauce. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Chopstix

6001-L Lomas NE (Fairgrounds)
Albuquerque NM
(505) 268-8777
www.chopstixabq.com
Tue-Thu, & Saturday 11am-8pm Fri-Sat: 11am-9pm closed Monday (hours can change without notice)
Meals Served: LunchDinner
Cuisine: Chinese

1.94 rating (30 votes)
Chopstix is a real culinary adventure with authentic Beijing-style cuisine. You'll find dishes like sweet red bean-stuffed steamed buns, dan dan noodles, mustard and dried bean curd, and stewed chicken feet. Amuse your server to no end by ordering the salted pork noodles, a traditional dish that "only Chinese people like!" A few bucks gets you a huge bowl filled with a rich, porky broth, rice noodles, bok choy, tripe and irregular chunks of pork belly, striated with fat and muscle—not for the meek of pork, to be sure.

3.46 rating (13 votes)
If your grandma's like ours, she's not one for fancy meals with odd ingredients or avant-garde decor. Instead, she'll be after good ingredients and impeccable service. That's where Christy Mae's comes in, winners of Best Restaurant to Take Grandma in our poll. Owned by the Tricarico family, recipes cooked from scratch, in-house baking, hearty soups and beautiful chicken pot pies promise to please your granny and anyone else looking for a down-home atmosphere and good portions at reasonable prices. Now serving breakfast 7 to 10:30 a.m. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

2.79 rating (37 votes)
The Cooperage is old-school Albuquerque, right down to the dusty light fixtures. The barrel-shaped steakhouse has been a standby for 30 years thanks to its mile-long complimentary salad and soup bar, aged steaks (at a place like this, prime rib is king) and big dance floor that’s always packed on the weekends. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Weck’s, oh Weck’s, how we yearn for your bottomless drinks, your enormous coffee cakes and your hangover-killing, sausage-and-bacon gravy. How we long to return for another “bowl o’ stuff” filled with hash browns, carne adovada, red chile and an over-easy egg. How we dream at night of your belly-bustin’ “freedom toast”! 4.28 rating (26 votes)
The Barley Room is a watering hole in the far Northeast Heights that fills patrons up with live music, lots of libations and a surprisingly ample menu. Snack on bar-friendly fried things (say yes to the sweet potato fries!), or have a proper meal with burgers, salads, pasta, New Mexican dishes and a few grilled meat and fish entrées. There’s a palpable sports bar feel to the place, but a diverse clientele keeps this bar/grill comfortable for just about everyone. The kitchen stays open until midnight every night; go ahead and linger. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)
