It’s an urban café on a quiet street corner, with a small menu of simple yet well-crafted dishes and a pledge to use local, seasonal and organic ingredients whenever possible. But unlike in Europe, the red and green chile won’t disappoint. Now serving brunch on Saturdays! The green chile Philly makes excellent use of rib eye steak and Wagner Farms green chile. Vegetarians are well cared for with sandwiches like the “Jiminy's criminy” and a veggie burger with heavenly hummus. There are also giant breakfast burritos, soups, salads and daily specials. (Alibi Staff, August 23, 2011) Add a Review Kokoro Japanese Restaurant is teeny-tiny in size with a menu succinctly pared down to a handful of quality home-style Japanese dishes—noodle soup (udon or soba), curry, donburi bowls, bento and a small sushi menu. The place is vegetarian/vegan-friendly with dishes like “just curry” (white rice with curry sauce and Japanese pickles), a wakame bowl of seaweed and noodles, and potato croquettes (tempura potato balls). Kokoro even includes complimentary and unlimited green tea, coffee or water with meals. If it’s all about the little things, then Kokoro delivers in a big way. The menu at Richard’s features traditional plates like green chile chicken enchiladas and tostadas compuestas, but also offers healthier, low-fat and vegetarian fare. And, believe it or not, the light plates are scrumptious. Be sure to order some fideos (tasty marinated noodles) on the side. On the other hand, “Bailey’s on the Taco Bell Parking Lot” doesn’t have the same ring. In any case, a few minutes on the restaurant’s third story deck at sunset will earn Bailey’s the benefit of the doubt. The beach theme finds its way into the dining experience in whimsical ways. The pasta dishes are made of organic, shell-shaped noodles. The seafood stew, a Cabernet bouillabaisse, is chunky and tastes like the sea. Fish tacos bear generous chunks of mahimahi and avocado, and are flanked by a dish of creamy papaya coleslaw. Bailey’s “beach burger” contains caramelized onions, jack cheese and double-roasted green chile on a quality ciabatta bun. The salads are made with feeling. There’s even cold-drip coffee! Fresh, tasty, healthy and inexpensive—we’re sold. Fortunately for us, La Montañita Co-op is not your typical grocery store. Specializing in local, organic and otherwise natural food products, the deli is no exception and doesn’t disappoint in taste or selection. The deli folks will make a hearty sandwich to your liking—or pick up a quick pint of one of the tasty hot or cold spreads and salads. For a delicious vegan dessert, stick with the chocolate Amazon cake, layered with luscious, fudge frosting. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010) Add a Review The Thai Vegan menu includes fake shrimp, chicken, fish and pepper steak. That said, it isn’t the sophistication of vegetarian faux meats that makes the place so good. It’s amazing because the cooks really know what they’re doing, and they use quality ingredients. The Thai iced tea (yup, that’s vegan too) is like sipping Bangkok through a straw. The menu boasts some of the best falafel and shawarma sandwiches around. Perfectly spiced, the combos include a beverage and a piece of rich, buttery baklava. A dark Arabic coffee is Jalil’s own blend, enhanced with a touch of cardamom. Jalil, Omar and Ebramem Kahla all cook the traditional dishes with flavor to spare. The sushi is unique, with many of the rolls forsaking seaweed in favor of thin-sliced cucumber or soy paper wrappings. They are drizzled with sauces, piled high with colored flying fish roes and artfully arranged with extra touches. The hot and sour soup is one of the best in Albuquerque—clear and light, with a complexity of texture and flavor. Elsewhere on the menu, a lineup of cooked vegetable dishes are dressed in several excellent housemade sauces. Vegetarians can add tofu to any of the vegetable dishes for $1—it comes crispy, kung pao style or as a buttered tofu steak with teriyaki sauce. We have no idea what those "fried vegetable nuggets" are made of (textured vegetable protein? gluten?), but they are scrumptious. Each of the little dishes costs only two or three bucks, and two or three dishes will fill you up. Try the combination plate with a boba tea for lunch. And nothing tastes better after a hectic afternoon than a huge bowl of Hawaiian shave ice covered with fruit syrup. After a successful 20-plus-year run in California, owner Lily Genka offers the UNM area delicious and healthy fare like cold soba noodles with Japanese mountain vegetables, fresh sashimi, baked squid and a bento box lunch so ample, we challenge you to finish the whole thing. Plenty of vegan options, too. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010) Add a Review Cute-as-a-button Mint Tulip’s menu reads the way you’d expect in a non-veggie café. There is a Reuben, as well as a BLT. This may seem like unusual fare for a vegan restaurant, but of course all of the meat-like items are made from non-animal sources. There’s also ample fuel for your inner sweet tooth and glutton: a grilled Elvis (a sandwich of peanut butter, almond butter, banana and agave), a gelatin-free fluffernutter, and a fully decadent lineup of baked goods and desserts, including some delightful lavender drop cookies. It’s locally sourced and very affordable, too. (Alibi Staff, July 28, 2011) Add a Review |
