Vegetarian, raw and/or vegan items are the mainstay of this grass-green truck. There’s a changing menu of hot sandwiches, raw desserts, smoothies and a few surprising offerings (like pulled BBQ jackfruit tacos). “Not the old brown hippie food from the seventies,” the Facebook page announces. “Neon food from the future of eating, priced so everyone can come back twenty or thirty times a month.” (Alibi Staff, October 12, 2012)

Café Lush is like a daydream of the way things might be in some future hybrid of Europe and Albuquerque. It’s an urban café on a quiet street corner, with a small menu of simple yet well-crafted dishes and a pledge to use local, seasonal and organic ingredients whenever possible. But unlike in Europe, the red and green chile won’t disappoint. Now serving brunch on Saturdays! (Alibi Staff, November 17, 2011)

In a storefront at The Pavilions at San Mateo, right off of I-40, Bliss is a refreshingly charming sandwich spot with an emphasis on local ingredients and made-from-scratch everything. The green chile Philly makes excellent use of rib eye steak and Wagner Farms green chile. Vegetarians are well cared for with sandwiches like the “Jiminy's criminy” and a veggie burger with heavenly hummus. There are also giant breakfast burritos, soups, salads and daily specials. Kokoro Japanese Restaurant

Albuquerque NM
(505) 830-2061
Mon–Sat: 11am–8pm Closed Sunday (subject to change)
Meals Served: LunchDinner

4.29 rating (31 votes)
Kokoro Japanese Restaurant is teeny-tiny in size with a menu succinctly pared down to a handful of quality home-style Japanese dishes—noodle soup (udon or soba), curry, donburi bowls, bento and a small sushi menu. The place is vegetarian/vegan-friendly with dishes like “just curry” (white rice with curry sauce and Japanese pickles), a wakame bowl of seaweed and noodles, and potato croquettes (tempura potato balls). Kokoro even includes complimentary and unlimited green tea, coffee or water with meals. If it’s all about the little things, then Kokoro delivers in a big way. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Ever had vegetarian posole? The menu at Richard’s features traditional plates like green chile chicken enchiladas and tostadas compuestas, but also offers healthier, low-fat and vegetarian fare. And, believe it or not, the light plates are scrumptious. Be sure to order some fideos (tasty marinated noodles) on the side. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Albuquerque - Nob Hill

3.66 rating (11 votes)
The concept of Bailey’s on the Beach seems to put some people off at first because, naturally, it’s nowhere near the ocean. On the other hand, “Bailey’s on the Taco Bell Parking Lot” doesn’t have the same ring. In any case, a few minutes on the restaurant’s third story deck at sunset will earn Bailey’s the benefit of the doubt. The beach theme finds its way into the dining experience in whimsical ways. The pasta dishes are made of organic, shell-shaped noodles. The seafood stew, a Cabernet bouillabaisse, is chunky and tastes like the sea. Fish tacos bear generous chunks of mahimahi and avocado, and are flanked by a dish of creamy papaya coleslaw. Bailey’s “beach burger” contains caramelized onions, jack cheese and double-roasted green chile on a quality ciabatta bun. The salads are made with feeling. There’s even cold-drip coffee! Fresh, tasty, healthy and inexpensive—we’re sold. (Alibi Staff, December 23, 2010)

The phrase “grocery café” typically conjures visions of orangey heat lamp chicken and Chinese food that’s been marinating in a pool of grease since the Yang Dynasty. Fortunately for us, La Montañita Co-op is not your typical grocery store. Specializing in local, organic and otherwise natural food products, the deli is no exception and doesn’t disappoint in taste or selection. The deli folks will make a hearty sandwich to your liking—or pick up a quick pint of one of the tasty hot or cold spreads and salads. For a delicious vegan dessert, stick with the chocolate Amazon cake, layered with luscious, fudge frosting. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

The Thai Vegan menu includes fake shrimp, chicken, fish and pepper steak. That said, it isn’t the sophistication of vegetarian faux meats that makes the place so good. It’s amazing because the cooks really know what they’re doing, and they use quality ingredients. The Thai iced tea (yup, that’s vegan too) is like sipping Bangkok through a straw. Paddy Rawal's OM: Fine Indian Dining has just moved into the space vacated by Annapurna. Their menu features primarily Northern Indian fare with touches of the Southwest, such as in their chipotle-spiked grilled shrimp. This should add some new spice for North Valley diners. The intimate India Kitchen has a large vegetarian menu that’s dotted with exciting combinations of fruits, nuts and vegetables. If tandoori tempeh isn’t on your radar, a steaming bowl of lamb mulligatawny might be right on target. Be sure to shop a little from the selection of spices and gifts up front. Mohamad Jalil and Bilal Omar opened Middle East Restaurant as a grocery with just a few tables in 2009. Their in-house bakery produces fresh breads daily. The dining area is canopied, giving the space the feel of a desert ramada. Two rows of booths lead to a traditional dining room for private parties. The menu boasts some of the best falafel and shawarma sandwiches around. Perfectly spiced, the combos include a beverage and a piece of rich, buttery baklava. A dark Arabic coffee is Jalil’s own blend, enhanced with a touch of cardamom. Jalil, Omar and Ebramem Kahla all cook the traditional dishes with flavor to spare. At the grocery, you can take home halal marshmallows with your halal meats. (Alibi Staff, May 20, 2011)

The menu is a polished combination of Chinese and Japanese classics, with twists—and some entire dishes—you probably haven’t seen before. The sushi is unique, with many of the rolls forsaking seaweed in favor of thin-sliced cucumber or soy paper wrappings. They are drizzled with sauces, piled high with colored flying fish roes and artfully arranged with extra touches. The hot and sour soup is one of the best in Albuquerque—clear and light, with a complexity of texture and flavor. Elsewhere on the menu, a lineup of cooked vegetable dishes are dressed in several excellent housemade sauces. Vegetarians can add tofu to any of the vegetable dishes for $1—it comes crispy, kung pao style or as a buttered tofu steak with teriyaki sauce. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Ayurvedic cuisine supposedly works with your body’s natural energies and constitution to create “soul” food that’s on a whole new plane. Winners of Best Vegetarian in our restaurant poll several years running, Annapurna’s food is satisfying but never heavy and, well, you just feel better after you eat there. Try Sunday brunch with spiced gluten-free, vegan pancakes and breakfast quinoa (but you’ll have to live without scrambled eggs, sorry). The shaded courtyard to the side of the restaurant is spectacular. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

The entirely vegetarian menu here is brief, with tapas-sized Asian dishes like steamed dumplings, cold sesame noodles, egg rolls and absolutely delicious "fried vegetable nuggets." We have no idea what those "fried vegetable nuggets" are made of (textured vegetable protein? gluten?), but they are scrumptious. Each of the little dishes costs only two or three bucks, and two or three dishes will fill you up. Try the combination plate with a boba tea for lunch. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

One barbecued eel bowl here will make you want to come down off the ledge. And nothing tastes better after a hectic afternoon than a huge bowl of Hawaiian shave ice covered with fruit syrup. After a successful 20-plus-year run in California, owner Lily Genka offers the UNM area delicious and healthy fare like cold soba noodles with Japanese mountain vegetables, fresh sashimi, baked squid and a bento box lunch so ample, we challenge you to finish the whole thing. Plenty of vegan options, too. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Cute-as-a-button Mint Tulip’s menu reads the way you’d expect in a non-veggie café. There is a Reuben, as well as a BLT. This may seem like unusual fare for a vegan restaurant, but of course all of the meat-like items are made from non-animal sources. There’s also ample fuel for your inner sweet tooth and glutton: a grilled Elvis (a sandwich of peanut butter, almond butter, banana and agave), a gelatin-free fluffernutter, and a fully decadent lineup of baked goods and desserts, including some delightful lavender drop cookies. It’s locally sourced and very affordable, too. (Alibi Staff, July 28, 2011)
