Winner of Best Casual Dining, Best Veggie Burger, Best Toast, Best Healthy Breakfast and Best Desserts in our restaurant polls. Sure, you go in thinking you’ll be good and get a skinny latte, scrambled egg whites and a side of turkey and green chile sausage, but five minutes later somebody’s saying “eclair” and the voice is coming from your mouth. Looking to step out of New Mexico for a night? Try stepping into the Bubble Lounge, where you can smoke sheesha (no, that's not some hip drug, it’s flavored tobacco), mingle with other "hook-ees," flirt with a belly dancer (on Friday and Saturday nights from 10 to 11 p.m.) and jam to the hip Indian beats that are guaranteed to be pumpin’. Best of all, it’s a great alternative to the bar scene for Downtown’s 18-and-over crowd. Fall onto a big, cushy couch, take off your shoes and let time pass with a nice cup of tea.bubb (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

This cute, Italian-styled café is tucked between Gold Street Caffé and P’tit Louis Bistro in one of Downtown’s most desirable dining districts . The rest of the place follows suit with bello hand-pressed espresso (tea, too), panini and other Euro-centric treats. (Alibi Staff, July 12, 2011)

Mon-Sun: 6:30am-3:30pm (hours can change without notice)

3.7 rating (20 votes)
According to one of our readers, Java Joe’s is “the last of a dying breed.” There are indeed “few choices left to get that cool Haight-Ashbury ’60s feeling.” Don’t get the wrong idea, though, this neighborhood coffee shop isn’t overflowing with hippies. It attracts a diverse crowd of cyclists, artists, musicians, hipsters and grownups just looking for a cuppa joe (albeit one with in-house roasted beans). The food is simple and satisfying, from freshly baked scones to waffles, burritos, sandwiches and salads, and the sidewalk seating is definitely for the dogs. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Torinos’ is owned by Maxime and Daniela Bouneou (a husband-and-wife team from Nice, France, and Torino, Italy, respectively), and their Northern Italian restaurant is the next best thing to a plane ticket to Occitania’s northeast corner. Everything is made from scratch, and ingredients are sourced as locally as possible. The pappardelle all’Amatriciana — fresh, house-made wide linguine tossed in a light tomato sauce with pecorino , chile, olives and guanciale bacon is a glorious bowl of pasta. In the guilty pleasures department, the foie gras would satisfy the itch of the most jaded addicts. Don’t pass up the spezzatino, a slowly braised beef brisket served with seared polenta cubes. There’s also half-melted mallard duck confit served with cranberry rhubarb compote. Drop in for à la carte breakfast and lunch, or book a table for dinner service—a $36, six-course set menu. Vegetarians and other food restrictions can be accommodated, Maxime says, but it’s best if they call ahead. “Then we can make something special.” (Alibi Staff, February 2, 2011)

Albuquerque - Midtown

www.cupcakeology.com

3.22 rating (51 votes)
Winner of Best Cupcakes in our most recent restaurant poll. With a rotating baking schedule of 32 cake and frosting combos, this place is bound to have a cupcake that calls to you. The “Monkeybutter” (banana cake topped with butterscotch buttercream) will have you swinging from a tree with its moist crumb and lightly flavored icing. Everything is baked from scratch and nothing less than real butter gets mixed into the frosting. Closed Sundays and Mondays. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

I Scream Ice Cream

2000 Carlisle NE (Midtown)
Albuquerque NM
(505) 268-0139
Mon-Sat: 11:30am-9pm Sun: 11:30am-8pm (hours can change without notice)

4.35 rating (20 votes)
Burque's newest retro-style ice cream shop is super kid-friendly with spill-indifferent concrete floors and tons of nostalgic fun for everyone. Kids are encouraged to adorn their ice cream with the help of "topping tokens," which they can pump into low-set gumball machines filled with fixings like crushed Oreos, Jelly Bellies and Fruity Pebbles. All 33 of the hard-packed flavors are made by Creamland right here in New Mexico. ISIC also serves up shakes, splits and other specialty treats to order, and most are between $1 and $5. Cheap!

Barry Manilow did “Copacabana,” but here in Albuquerque we do Café Cubano. Located in the popular unisex salon Laru Ni Hati, this capable Cuban café has good cigars, good bottled beers and an espresso menu worthy of a steamy Havana night. We wouldn’t mention Barry, though. One of their loyal patrons may see fit to clock you with a plancha. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Sure, you go in thinking you’ll be good and get a skinny latte, scrambled local egg whites and a side of turkey and green chile sausage, but five minutes later somebody’s saying “milkshake” and the voice is coming from your mouth. This Duke City fixture prides itself on using locally sourced ingredients like eggs and greens. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Limonata Italian Street Food Caffe

This sunny café occupies the sweet spot in The Village at Silver and Wellesley vacated by Café Giuseppe. Giuseppe regulars will be happy to know Limonata still offers killer espresso, now paired with a large array of mouth-slavering Italian treats. Try the prosciutto panino, the antipasto platter for two, or stock up on authentic Italian groceries in the market. (Alibi Staff, December 10, 2012)

Satellite serves up coffee (the Best Coffee, according to Best of Burque Restaurants polls) and tea, as well as burritos, sandwiches and pastries. This is a good choice if you’re hungry late (it’s open until at least 10:30 p.m. most nights) or need a quick gift for your beverage-loving friends: We recommend the too-cute travel mugs.
