Albuquerque - Downtown

Elvis is in the house—Chef Elvis Bencomo, that is. With co-owners Monica (Elvis’ wife) and Orlando (his brother), Pasión Latin Fusion serves up dishes found throughout Latin America with Elvis’ own creative flair. Monica runs the front of the house and her gracious, lively style makes you feel right at home. To eat, there are fish tacos crusted in banana, garnished with pickled onions, avocado and sauce. The succulent carnitas tacos and George’s pescado à la Veracruzana are spectacular. The “croque señorita” is Elvis’ version of a croque-madame—a seared pork chop, fried egg and Swiss cheese served over tacu tacu (Peruvian rice and beans, similar to Cuba's moros y cristianos) with a huacatay (Peruvian mint) cream sauce. This brightly colored taco shop is always busy. Despite the constant stream of hard hats, auto mechanics and high-heeled office workers, Taquería Mexico somehow stays spotlessly clean. And the food is great! Their tortas come on big, hot rolls, stuffed with your choice of meats (try the asada or desebrada ), lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise and avocado. The big, juicy burgers are fantastic, as are the burritos, the caldo de res and the soft corn tortilla tacos (of course). (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

A marisqueria specializing in Sinaloense-style seafood, El Zarandeado takes a craftsman’s approach to your meals. There’s the molcajete sinaloense , in which a basalt mortar is filled with mariscos and a pureed green chile sauce, then baked; the cocomarisco , a young coconut emptied of its water and packed with a mix of marinated seafood and young coconut flesh; and above all, el zarandeado itself, a grey snapper “cult object” that needs to be ordered an hour ahead of time. A tiny, L-shaped Mexican joint with a tiny, tempting menu of tacos, tostadas and more. Order a ceviche tostada and some tacos al pastor and you’ll feel like you’re sitting on the beach of a coastal Mexican getaway. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

A quick look through the fish-shaped menu at Mariscos La Playa is assurance that the food, replete with familiar favorites and unexpected treats, is more authentic than the mock beach painted on the wall. You must order the chicharrón de pescado . Similar to pork rinds, fish is thinly sliced—skin, fins and all—then ever-so-lightly battered and deep-fried until crunchy. The aggressively cooked meat has a cracking skin and perplexing dry yet chewy texture that comes together as a titillating snack. Pair it with warm corn tortillas and a frosty Margarita. So sabroso ! This is one of those sweet mom ’n’ pop restaurants that is much beloved by neighbors but nearly unknown by folks in other parts of the city. Well, now you know. If you’re in the mood for real Mexican food like chicharron burritos, shredded chicken tacos or irresistibly good desebrada , then head on over to El Sabor.

Look beyond the marketing gimmick of the poor, sweaty guy asphyxiating on the Central median, face concealed behind a sequined Mexican wrestling mask. Either chow down inside the colorful restaurant (try the fresh peanut salsa and horchata ) or have items from its extensive menu delivered directly to your door. Sundays feature a spectacular display of tableside live mariachi music. (Be forewarned: If you know a little Spanish, your interactions with the staff will go much more smoothly.) Open ’til 11 p.m.! This place is the “it” spot for inexpensive plates of grilled sirloin, chicken, shrimp and fried fish tacos. A family of four can eat and drink, complete with an unlimited salsa bar, for 27 clams. And the hot papotas piled high with meat are calling out to the lumberjack in all of us. Answer the call—it’s your stomach, not the collection agency for once. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

The seafaring mateys at Los Equipales make a fine, fine bowl of soup. The fish tacos will make you forget you live inland, and the ceviche will have you screaming “here, fishy, fishy!” So forget the lobster bites and have some authentic Mexican seafood, voted the best in Albuquerque in our restaurant poll. While you’re at it, the glass jars of housemade horchata are so huge, you could practically swim in them. If you prefer to stay dry, try the flan instead. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

This Westside gem awards patrons with steamy, heaping plates of Mexican seafood in a clean, cozy dining area. Breakfast, lunch or dinner, it's usually pretty hopping, though there's always a seat and prompt service. Try the shrimp or crab quesadilla, with just the right balance of cheese and seafood. The cocktails have delicious shrimp (even octopus) served in their own juices with hunks of avocado, spices and onion. When the menu warns you something's going to be hot, it really is. You can always cool off with an order of homemade flan. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Mariscos Las Islitas

Albuquerque NM

Mon-Sun: 10am-9pm (subject to change)
Meals Served: LunchDinner
Nearby Theater: Movies West (See Film Times)

3 rating (3 votes)
Las Islitas stakes its claim on just one noble pursuit—the seafood-heavy cuisine of Mexico’s Central Pacific state of Nayarit. The food is simple, delicious and authentic, having clearly evolved in a place where the raw ingredients are good and fresh. No culinary tap-dancing is necessary. Brothy, aromatic soups and fish-filled empanadas are a few must-haves, and even the unsavory sounding dishes such as camarones a la cucaracha (“cockroach” shrimp) are surprisingly delicious. You will definitely leave with a full panza. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)
