On the other hand, “Bailey’s on the Taco Bell Parking Lot” doesn’t have the same ring. In any case, a few minutes on the restaurant’s third story deck at sunset will earn Bailey’s the benefit of the doubt. The beach theme finds its way into the dining experience in whimsical ways. The pasta dishes are made of organic, shell-shaped noodles. The seafood stew, a Cabernet bouillabaisse, is chunky and tastes like the sea. Fish tacos bear generous chunks of mahimahi and avocado, and are flanked by a dish of creamy papaya coleslaw. Bailey’s “beach burger” contains caramelized onions, jack cheese and double-roasted green chile on a quality ciabatta bun. The salads are made with feeling. There’s even cold-drip coffee! Fresh, tasty, healthy and inexpensive—we’re sold. With eight burgers to choose from—including the delectable Nawlins with blue cheese—and 33 local beers on tap, the joint should serve as a beacon for anyone with a carnivorous appetite. oui
to La Provence. Nob Hill's newest restaurant is still a little rough around the edges, but has the potential to be great. The wine bar in the front of the restaurant (chockfull of rare-find French wines) is very cozy, while the back dining room, with its tables packed tightly together, feels cramped at peak hours. Likewise, the waitstaff can come off as inexperienced, but is very nice and accommodating nonetheless. Try the
moules frites
(mussels steamed in white wine) served with a side of little truffle french fries or the
confit de canard aux lentilles
(roasted duck with lentils). For dessert, the crème brûlée is a must. BLP also does brunch and half-off wine bottles on Sundays and Mondays. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010) View/Add Reviews [ 4 ] Café Cubano at Laru Ni HatiTues-Fri: 9am-9pm

Closed Sunday & Monday (subject to change) Barry Manilow did “Copacabana,” but here in Albuquerque we do Café Cubano. Located in the popular unisex salon Laru Ni Hati, this capable Cuban café has good cigars, good bottled beers and an espresso menu worthy of a steamy Havana night. We wouldn’t mention Barry, though. One of their loyal patrons may see fit to clock you with a
plancha. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010) View/Add Reviews [ 2 ] Crazy FishLunch:

There are hordes of annoying knockoff-clad barflies as far as the eye can see, but the humidor is well-stocked and well-attended by knowledgeable staff, and there’s a rooftop deck (if you can make it up there; there’s always a line). Get there early for the best seats. Ordering á la carte is always allowed, but if you’re going for the all-you-can-eat, you’ve got two pages full of options and an hour in which to explore them. Edamame, tempura, miso soup, rolls, hand rolls and a small selection of nigiri are all fair game. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010) Add a Review The phrase “grocery café” typically conjures visions of orangey heat lamp chicken and Chinese food that’s been marinating in a pool of grease since the Yang Dynasty. Fortunately for us, La Montañita Co-op is not your typical grocery store. Specializing in local, organic and otherwise natural food products, the deli is no exception and doesn’t disappoint in taste or selection. The deli folks will make a hearty sandwich to your liking—or pick up a quick pint of one of the tasty hot or cold spreads and salads. For a delicious vegan dessert, stick with the chocolate Amazon cake, layered with luscious, fudge frosting. You’re sure to see someone you know if you eat at Mannie’s for breakfast on the weekend. People go for the pancakes, the homemade muffins, the French toast and, of course, to see and be seen. Mannie’s has a marvelous BLT with thick slabs of bacon, a nest of shredded lettuce and a generous slathering of mayo. There are also vastly more women than men filling the tables, though that’s more understandable. After all, half of the building is dedicated to fancy soaps, hairbrushes, jewelry and perfumes. But this pharmacy (which doesn’t take insurance and therefore fills few prescriptions) is full of mysterious contrasts and pleasant surprises. The mostly-sandwich menu is far above par, with real roasted turkey breast and house-made brisket, and Model has the Best Soda Fountain in Albuquerque, according to our readers. Mon 2pm-midnight (subject to change) With sometimes too-loud live music and a party-hard crowd, it’s usually best to avoid this place on the weekends. But stop in for a late lunch or weeknight burger and a beer, and you’ll get a different experience. The beef here is grass-fed, New Mexico-grown, and steroid- and antibiotic-free, and the cooks at Monte Vista deserve praise for what they do with it. The freshly ground burgers are juicy and big, the steak frites hit the spot, and the beef skewers are tender and one of the best deals on cow in town. And if you do brave the weekend crowd, you’ll be rewarded by bowls of mussels served with your choice of several sauces, including coconut curry, Mexican and classic French. Served with a grilled baguette to soak up a small sea of broth, it’s a great way to fill a belly for $10. (Alibi Staff, December 23, 2010) Add a Review |
