Mannies is a little neighborhood diner that’s actually quite big. You’re sure to see someone you know if you eat at Mannies for breakfast on the weekend. People go for the pancakes, the homemade muffins, the French toast and, of course, to see and be seen. Mannies has a marvelous BLT with thick slabs of bacon, a nest of shredded lettuce and a generous slathering of mayo.

There are more members of AARP than UNM students at this University-area lunch counter, but it has nothing to do with the food. There are also more women than men filling the tables, though that’s understandable. After all, half of the building is dedicated to fancy soaps, hairbrushes, jewelry and perfumes. But this pharmacy (which doesn’t take insurance and therefore fills few prescriptions) is full of mysterious contrasts and pleasant surprises. The mostly sandwich menu is far above par, with real roasted turkey breast and house-made brisket, and Model has the Best Soda Fountain in Albuquerque, according to our readers. With sometimes too-loud live music and a party-hard crowd, it’s usually best to avoid this place on the weekends. But stop in for a late lunch or weeknight burger and a beer, and you’ll get a different experience. The beef here is grass-fed, New Mexico-grown, and steroid- and antibiotic-free, and the cooks at Monte Vista deserve praise for what they do with it. The freshly ground burgers are juicy and big, the steak frites hit the spot, and the beef skewers are tender and one of the best deals on cow in town. And if you do brave the weekend crowd, you’ll be rewarded by bowls of mussels served with your choice of several sauces, including coconut curry, Mexican and classic French. Served with a grilled baguette to soak up a small sea of broth, it’s a great way to fill a belly for $10. (Alibi Staff, December 23, 2010)

If you like your comfort food with a gourmet twist, it’s here. Nob Hill Bar & Grill boasts meatloaf (crowned with smoked bacon) and burgers (American kobe). The appetizers and classic cocktails alone are worth the visit. Cheese sticks encrusted in nuts and miso-seared ahi tuna on wontons go down swimmingly (did we mention the saltwater aquarium?) with a signature cocktail or an organic ale. A few vegetarian entrées, decent hours, a full bar and comfy but chic atmosphere make Nob Hill Bar & Grill a solid addition to the neighborhood. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Jewish cuisine comes to Nob Hill in the form of Nosh, a friendly deli style café where the lox is lush, the cream cheese is tangy and the owner calls you “hon.” You’ll walk out smelling like knish, but it’s worth it for a crack at Albuquerque’s most delicious and authentic latkes. (Alibi Staff, November 21, 2013)

Nu Asia Vegan Restaurant

Vegan foodies rejoice! Another Asian eatery has opened with a mission to cater to your needs, and this one features all-you-can-eat vegan sushi. Try the lucky roll, or the salmon crunch roll, or a bento box and munch, munch, munch to your veggie heart’s content. (Alibi Staff, May 21, 2014)

The process used to create Olo’s vibrant flavors guarantees live, active cultures in the product. There are 10 flavors available on tap at any given time, every one richly flavorful. (You can find this week’s list of flavors on Olo's website.) Follow the signs and take a cup to the stainless steel taps. Once you have your yogurt(s) in a cup, there are more than 45 toppings to crown your dish. Finish it off with a swirl of whipped cream and weigh in at the register. At less than 50 cents an ounce (and prices drop during cold weather), you can customize a treat that satisfies your palate and your pocketbook. (Alibi Staff, November 18, 2010)

P’tit Louis’ new Nob Hill digs is a collaboration between Christopher Descarpentries, John Phinizy and Tom White of Il Vicino and Two Fools Tavern. Descarpentries has a knack for building Paris from scratch. The restaurant on Gold transports you to Paris of the ’20s. P’tit Louis on Silver resembles bistro along the outskirts of Paris. The menu welcomes diners to many of the downtown bistro’s popular dishes but there are some new choices as well. Descarpentries will continue the practice of daily specials. Nob Hill diners will have the added pleasure of dinner hours Thursday through Saturday and, when weather permits, alfresco dining on the patio. Special private seatings are still available on other evenings. (Alibi Staff, September 29, 2011)

Satellite serves up coffee (the Best Coffee, according to Best of Burque Restaurants polls) and tea, as well as burritos, sandwiches and pastries. This is a good choice if you’re hungry late (it’s open until at least 10:30 p.m. most nights) or need a quick gift for your beverage-loving friends: We recommend the too-cute travel mugs. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

3.49 rating (52 votes)
The surprising thing about Scalo is that it’s simultaneously more fancy and less expensive than you’d think. It’s just as breezy and classy as ever in its high-ceilinged dining room. All of the bottles on the wine list are half-price on Monday nights, and there’s free, live music in the bar. Voted Best Italian for 2013. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

If you’re into meat and motors you should check this place out. The back half of the building is reserved for customizing motorcycles while the front half is a rollicking restaurant with a great beer selection and a stage for live music. The menu revels in heavier fare like burgers and fried chicken. Stop by in the morning for the best tasting breakfast in Nob Hill. (Alibi Staff, December 6, 2012)

Shogun Japanese Restaurant

4.18 rating (34 votes)
Too much time studying can turn the sweetest soul into a big ’ol crab. But just so you remember that not all crabs are bad, take a lunch or dinner break at Shogun. There’s sushi, sashimi and nigiri, and the soft shell crab rolls are a treat worth mentioning a couple of times. The best part is watching your food get made right in front of you and then floated around the table on an armada of wooden boats. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

The Shop

Albuquerque NM

Nearby Theater: Guild Cinema (See Film Times)

It’s in a location that has seen quite a few restaurants come and go over the years, but The Shop looks like it just might be poised to make a real go of it. With an emphasis on high quality, locally sourced foods, the menu here covers breakfast (try the pancakes and the chilaquiles) and lunch (I suggest a cubano or chicken and waffles) with equal finesse and attention to detail. Here’s to hoping they stick around. (Alibi Staff, March 12, 2014)

On the streets of Asia, vendors often specialize in one dish handed down through generations, preparing quick meals for passersby like hot noodle bowls, exotic sandwiches and spicy skewered satays. It’s a hotbed of cultural diversity including Vietnamese pho, Korean noodles, Japanese udon, and Malay and Chinese stir-fry. StreetFood Asia's menu offers a dizzying array of sauces, toppings, garnishes, meats, seafood, and vegetables in dinner portions or small plates in the heart of Nob Hill. Exotic bar drinks and an long list of excellent sakes adds sparkle to your meal. (Alibi Staff, July 12, 2011)

Thai Vegan Nob Hill

3804 Central Ave SE (Nob Hill)
Albuquerque NM
www.thaivegannm.com/frame/h...
Mon-Sat 11 am-9 pm Sun Noon-9 pm (hours can change without notice)
Meals Served: LunchDinner
Nearby Theater: Guild Cinema (See Film Times)

4 rating (1 vote)
The Thai Vegan menu includes fake shrimp, chicken, fish and pepper steak. That said, it isn’t the vegetarian faux meats that makes the place so good, but rather the fact that the cooks really know what they’re doing as they whip up their vegan delights. The Thai iced tea (yup, that’s vegan too) is like sipping Bangkok through a straw. (Alibi Staff, April 10, 2013)

A good polish sausage can be a hunk of fatty bliss, but the guys at Torpedo Dog know that the right sauce can further elevate it into a savory, succulent transcendence. Whether you choose red chile mustard, enchilada sauce or chipotle BBQ, all their sauces are homemade and guaranteed to make your palate sing. (Alibi Staff, October 12, 2012)

This British Isles-style pub is the brainchild of successful local restaurateur Tom White (Scalo and Il Vicino). Highlights include buckets of beer, scads of Scotches and a full menu until 11 p.m. weekdays and midnight on weekends. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)
