This super-cute new shop, in the old Relish space Downtown, serves a hefty menu of inspired hot and cold sandwiches. There’s an emphasis on homemade touches, from the sweet onion jam on the roast beef sandwich to the cookie that comes with every order. Good salads, daily made-from-scratch soups and a new sandwich special every day keep the lunch crowd on its toes. (Alibi Staff, November 4, 2010)

Owner Nancy Rogers makes at least two flavors of mouthwatering scones every morning near the Artichoke Café on Central. Try the raspberry: a buttery little nugget served warm, perfectly crumbly and bursting with real raspberries. Inhale it and lick the plate. D.G. also serves good coffee, omelets, breakfast burritos and more. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

A good bet for Greek/American in the heart of Downtown’s bustling Fourth Street business area. Take a break from your hectic work schedule with a nice, hot cup of lentil soup, a burger and a big smile from the friendly staff. Low carb options are abundant. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Elvis is in the house—Chef Elvis Bencomo, that is. With co-owners Monica (Elvis’ wife) and Orlando (his brother), Pasión Latin Fusion serves up dishes found throughout Latin America with Elvis’ own creative flair. Monica runs the front of the house and her gracious, lively style makes you feel right at home. To eat, there are fish tacos crusted in banana, garnished with pickled onions, avocado and sauce. The succulent carnitas tacos and George’s pescado à la Veracruzana are spectacular. The “croque señorita” is Elvis’ version of a croque-madame—a seared pork chop, fried egg and Swiss cheese served over tacu tacu (Peruvian rice and beans, similar to Cuba's moros y cristianos) with a huacatay (Peruvian mint) cream sauce. Sushi King is a small, hip, casual spot located a few doors up from the Century 14 Downtown movie theater. They serve fresh nigiri, sashimi and sushi rolls, plus an interesting assortment of seafood salads and noodle dishes. We love the variety and convenience this place offers when you’ve got a case of the Downtown ho-hums. They’ve also got excellent sake, so be sure to split a bottle with your sushi chef. This bright and colorful café caters primarily to Downtown office workers (Weekdays—get it?). We like that it has substantial salads and New Mexican fare to choose from that hit the spot. The selection of housemade baked goods is huge and very tempting. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

This old-school sandwich emporium won 2007’s categories for Best Sandwich and Best Soup. It prepares satisfying hot and cold hoagies at a decent price, with a chocolate chip cookie thrown in at no extra charge. The "sundown" is a staple for chronic dine-’n’-drivers; basically a turkey dinner in sandwich form, complete with stuffing and cranberry sauce. Try it on toasted whole wheat or sourdough instead of the standard roll, which quickly becomes too soggy to eat while steering, talking on your cell phone and jotting down the appointment you just made in your BlackBerry. Can delivery pizza be elevated to a work of art? The respondents to 2007’s Best of Burque Restaurants poll sure seem to think so—Da Vinci’s was voted No. 1 in the Best Comfort Food and Best Undiscovered Gem categories. You can get your "canvas" covered in any number of gourmet toppings, from ricotta cheese to roasted red potatoes. Or get your pie festooned in pepperoni. It’s great any way you slice it. This mother-daughter bakery specializes in special occasion cakes, some boxed lunches and a surprisingly large selection of mini-cupcakes filled with ethereal creams, berries and other unexpected delights. The cupcakes look less than perfect, but everything else is down pat—the flavors and textures are just how we like ’em and among the very best we’ve had. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

You can't help but pick out this bakery's fabulous-looking treats from the crowd. Luckily for you, these cakes and cookies actually taste as good as they look. Unluckily for you, they’re open only by appointment, but the space has plenty of wedding and party supplies to make up for it. If you’re pressed for time, try placing an order (for pick-up or shipping) online instead at patisseriec.com. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

New location! One of you wants pizza, another insists on soup and salad, the third won’t eat anything but pasta. Don’t waste time fighting; just get on over to Tomato Cafe. It’s quick, inexpensive and all-you-can-eat. Those aren’t usually words you’d use to describe genuinely good food but the pizza here is. Super-thin-crusted and topped with things like feta, basil, barbecued chicken and artichoke hearts, it’s a dream come true (except for Chicago-style fans). (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

4.2 rating (7 votes)
You can bank on getting good pie here. From plain old cheese to the "super combo"—pepperoni, sliced ham, mushrooms, green peppers, red onions, black olives, beef, pork sausage and Italian sausage—all is well. Amadeo's makes them up to 26 inches across. The subs rate just as high. Toasted rolls, baked locally, are stuffed with your choice of meat (salami, ham, meatballs and so on), cheese and veggies. The meatballs are totally boss. Not too heavy with an almost silky texture, they come drowned in a spicy tomato sauce and smothered in mozzarella cheese. Closed Sunday. Really, it's all about the crust. A slice of pizza, no matter what its style, should stand on its own without the help of heaps of toppings. Venezia's New York-style slice ($2) does just that, right down to the last bit of carbohydrate crunch. You can add lots of the usual toppings (30 cents each) and some better-than-usual ones, like fresh garlic, fresh tomatoes and artichoke hearts. Thick-crusted, deep-dish, Sicilian-style pizza is available in one size, 12-inch by 16-inch ($12). The owner’s mother (who is from Italy) even gets in on the act with her famous marinara sauce; delicious, smooth-textured meatballs; chicken and eggplant Parmesan for heroes; and pasta dishes like meat lasagna and baked ziti. Open until 10 p.m. weekdays. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)
