Frontier won Alibi awards last year for Best Value, Late Night, Carne Adovada, Tortillas, Green Chile and Breakfast Burritos. Frontier is pretty much the one restaurant most folks in Albuquerque can agree on. Though we may complain about the crowds, the escalating prices and the lack of real butter, we go back again and again. The food is always perfectly, consistently delicious. Breakfast burritos, sweet rolls, huevos rancheros, green chile stew, fresh-squeezed orange juice: it’s all great. The ambience is strictly cafeteria plus tons of John Wayne art. Don’t miss this place, whatever you do. Now open until 1 a.m. every night. Sorry. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

  • Breakfast Burrito  [ Mon Dec 28 2009 11:54 AM ]

Frontier will make your breakfast burrito with fried eggs rather than scrambled and they don't even blink about it. Next time, I'll substitute french fries for hash browns; I usually dump the fries on top with a small green chile stew, but I might as well just get those crispy fries inside.

  • Excellent fried egg BB  [ Thu Jan 28 2010 1:40 PM ]

ZZZOMG!!! Nick, you're culinary tastes are exquisite. I have tried the breakfast burrito now with over easy and over medium. I am a fan of over easy eggs, but there is something about the medium nestled inside the bountiful breakfast burrito.

And the fries.. smothered in vegetarian green chile stew or even bum stew.

What other secrets of the universe do you know?

  • The last thing I had at Frontier was....  [ Fri Feb 5 2010 9:45 AM ]

the huevos rancheros, which I've avoided for decades, convinced that it was a rip-off. But actually it was pretty damn good. I'm not always a fan of Frontier's "ranch style" beans but they work well in the huevos, and the "huevos lite" (one egg instead of two) is one of their less-expensive breakfasts.

The other secret I know, and you'll just have to trust me… is a fried egg on top of two pancakes smothered in both syrup AND ranchero sauce. The sweet/hot is greater than the sum of its parts. Most people will never try it, though, because it seems so weird. But that actually makes it more fun.

  • Best historic dive in town  [ Mon Aug 23 2010 12:46 PM ]

I have fond memories of the Frontier and all the breakfast burritos and western hashbrowns consumed during my undergrad days at UNM. I still love to go back there to people watch while grabbing a bite and a cup of diner-level joe.

  • Breakfast last night at the Frontier.  [ Wed Sep 15 2010 5:56 PM ]

A Breakfast Burrito with very spicy green chile and a Frontier roll. Really tasty, but the rest of my system didn't like the very hot chile I ladled on the burrito.

Pro tip on the huevos: you can substitute hashbrowns (or, hell, fries, go nuts) for the beans. My Frontier hot mix used to be huevos lite, over medium, red chile, hb for beans, add cheese.

And forum rules prevent me from bullying the "Over Rated" guy, but I'm THINKIN' it, "Dagongood."

  • 2010 is the year of hashbrowns.  [ Thu Sep 23 2010 8:18 AM ]

It actually carries over into part of 2011 because it's based on the fiscal year. I've never tried hashbrowns in the huevos, but I've seen other people do it. And now I'll have to try it because you dared me. I've also never committed an entire breakfast to Frontier's red chile. Another dare. Next time I go, I'll order just like you say and report back.
