If it’s salt-of-the-earth, tried-and-true New Mexican favorites you’re after, hit up a Garcia’s in your area. It has daily specials, breakfast anytime and even a "gringo menu" that’ll fill you up without depleting your wallet. The huevos rancheros with green chile will leave you licking the plate and contemplating seconds. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

  • Best Garcia's  [ Tue May 26 2009 3:01 PM ]

Recent Garcia's visits have all been at the Old Town location on Central. Today I dined at the spot on Fourth Street ... everything about it is sooooo much better.

  • What is better?  [ Tue May 26 2009 3:03 PM ]

    Food? Atomsphere? Service?

  • 4th & mountain FTW  [ Tue May 26 2009 3:15 PM ]

    It's all about atmosphere.

  • Everything  [ Tue May 26 2009 3:16 PM ]

All of the above, but mostly the food. Chile, potatoes, toast, eggs, all better.

But the service is also better, and it's a little more cozy.

  • That's psycho-somatic delusion  [ Tue May 26 2009 3:21 PM ]

induced by the atmosphere. It's the same as the rest. I'm something of a Garcia's aficionado.

  • yuck.  [ Tue May 26 2009 3:22 PM ]

    me no like any location.

  • I'd imagine you don't.  [ Tue May 26 2009 3:24 PM ]

    Not enough salt. ;)

  • And too many  [ Tue May 26 2009 3:28 PM ]

beans. I mean who the hell doesn't like beans! You Salty Lime Sucker.

  • Gross  [ Tue May 26 2009 3:34 PM ]

They're all pretty disgusting. Their chile is watery. There food just isn't very good. I always choose to go to Duran Central Pharmacy. On 4th, I prefer On The Corner (formerly Ernie's).

  • Duran's is great, but there is only the one and they keep short hours.  [ Tue May 26 2009 3:40 PM ]

IMO, Garcia's is way better then their expensive competition—Garduño's, Little Anitas, etc.

  • Not Gross!  [ Tue May 26 2009 3:45 PM ]

Garcia's is great for a cheap New Mexi diner. It's perfect when that's what you're after.

Duran's is delicious, but pricey. And their tortillas are just ridiculous.

  • Duran's  [ Tue May 26 2009 4:10 PM ]

    is kind of a ripioso

  • Durans  [ Tue May 26 2009 4:11 PM ]

Yeah, Duran's is expensive, but they have some of the best tortillas in the city.

  • Duran's  [ Tue May 26 2009 4:25 PM ]

No, they have some of the best red in the city. Their tortillas are stupid, chewy and as big as a pizza. Does anyone really need that much tortilla?

  • Duran's red  [ Tue May 26 2009 4:36 PM ]

It's tasty enough, sure, but there's no heat.

    And they are waaaaaaay overpriced.

  • Downtown Garcia's Red  [ Tue May 26 2009 4:55 PM ]

It's good, AND hot. Today I had coffee, toast and two eggs with red. It was about $5.

  • Wrong!  [ Fri May 29 2009 4:06 PM ]

    The Madmammajamma said;

"Duran's is great, but there is only the one and they keep short hours."

Nope, there is another one on Menual, West of Washington, in the old Washington St. firehoue and is open for supper. And yes Jessica, people do need tha tmuch tortilla. Especially since Duran's are made fresh to order and can double as a small shelter if necessary. Pricey compared to the mystery ingredients at Garcia's? Yes. But you get what you pay for.

  • Duran's on Menaul  [ Fri May 29 2009 4:15 PM ]

is different. Don't ask. Just is. And I truly don't get the craze over Duran's. I think it's firmly 'eh.'

    But Mary & Tito's....mmmmm...

  • Mary&Tito's  [ Fri May 29 2009 4:18 PM ]

    DarcyBennet wins!

Mary&Tito's have been one of the best things about moving from the mountain and into the BrewTown barrio for me.

  • What the hell is the BrewTown barrio?  [ Fri May 29 2009 4:29 PM ]

Maybe I live there too but I just don't know what it's called.

Seconded. Er, thirded: Mary & Tito's is the only decent chile in the North Valley. Gauntlet slammed down. Wham!

Also awesome, the chile at Barelas Coffee house, especially the green. But that would be the South Valley.

  • I Could Be Wrong...  [ Fri May 29 2009 4:54 PM ]

...but since the late 1960's (when I became aware of the area) BrewTown Barrio (and the subsequent gang) turf is bordered by Menual to the South, Griegos or Montano (or where ever the Los Padilla's gang turf starts) to the North, 2nd St. to the east and 12th St or so to the West. I dunno for sure. Ask some cop or Pete Dinelli. I'm sure those jerks have it all mapped out.

Kick it at Leo's or Stufy's on Canderaria& 12th or at John Brooks across the street from there and you will inevitably see some of the homies cruising and sporting their BrewTown plaqueas all Old English style on their up-turned hat brims and ginormous black t-shirts.

    Orale!

  • Hey, I do live there.  [ Sun May 31 2009 9:36 AM ]

I thought the Los Padillas turf was the deep South Valley.

And why "BrewTown"? Who's brewing what?

  • maybe  [ Sun May 31 2009 10:15 AM ]

cuz they're brewin up a can of whoop ass.

couldn't help myself. sorry yet again.

  • Duran's 2?  [ Mon Jun 1 2009 12:06 PM ]

there is another one on Menual, West of Washington

    Shoulda said "Central Pharmacy".

    But

on Brewtown geography. Any kid who goes to Valley could tell you that. IIRC it runs from as far west as the river and as far south as the freeway. It seemed like all the Brewtown trouble makers I went to school with lived in the Rio Grande/Floral neighborhoods.
