One of the crown jewels of Albuquerque, Mary & Tito’s is the kind of place you’ll want to bring visitors so they can experience the wonder of chile. The red chile here is velvety smooth, sweet and hot, but not as hot as the fruity green. For a really bad hangover, you’ll need a turnover, a calzone-shaped stuffed sopaipilla that’s guaranteed to make a regular out of you. Go for lunch during the week and dinner on Friday and Saturday. Also, Mary & Tito’s finally takes credit cards!

Now open until 8pm Mon-Sat [ Mon Jan 21 2008 2:58 PM ]

They're still closed Sundays (like all real New Mexican joints), but they no longer shut down at 6pm Mon-Thu anymore. I've already started eating there more often.
Two points about Mary & Tito's:
1. The chile is awesome and often blisteringly hot. I feel like I can't take certain out-of-town guests to it because they will not be able to eat anything.
2. They get major points for avoiding the drowned-in-melted cheese aesthetic of big-feed restaurants like Sadies. It's all about the chile. (See point 1.)

The 8pm-every-day closing time was an experiment that they quickly shut down. Which is sad, since I usually eat sit-down-at-a-restaurant dinner after 6pm.
They are still open until 8 on Fri/Sat, which is when I usually eat there.

The Very Best Carne Adovada in town [ Sat Jan 16 2010 11:49 PM ]

You simply cannot go wrong with anything you order at this fine establishment, it is truly awesome. My favorite, their version of carne adovada is a tried-died-in-the-wool sure as $hit cure for a hangover! Sadly, if you arrive before 11am the wait-staff, cooks are in the snail-mode of service, hiding in their shells, in denial of your presence, that is until "Nana" makes her arrival, then the heat is turned up and things pick up in a hurry.
This place is in my top ten, in town.

It was the hours. Every time I wanted to check 'em out, they were closed. I finally made a point of going there on a day when I could get there early enough, though, and damn it was worth it.
Carne adovada! (I judge everyone by their carne adovada.) The pork is flavorful and tender. The chile is a unique delight, with a hint of sweetness at first, followed by a perfect medium burn that is strong enough to notice but doesn't distract you from the underlying flavor. Afterwords you'll be ever-so-slightly sniffling and picking little pieces of chile skin out of your teeth.

It's clearly this that got 'em their James Beard 2010 America’s Classics Award, but the green chile is where it's at for me. Well, except I always get both, which makes for a beautiful huevos rancheros plate.

Carne adovada! My nights are filled with dreams of my next encounter with this delicious dish. My only complaint is that once this place got "Bearded" the yuppies have flooded the parking lot with their high-dollar cars, and it is impossible at times for local long-time patrons like myself and my better half to be regular customers of this fine establishment. Hopefully the dust will settle, but I think that what we discovered decades ago won't go away. I also think that Mary deserves this award, she and her passed husband have worked and labored endlessly to make the very best New Mexican cuisine anywhere!

I called in one Saturday around 7pm to place a to-go order right after they got the award and they told me they were closing early because they were "overwhelmed". Some Saturday nights they'd just be waiting for me to pick up my order before they closed. Not anymore. We'll see if the dust settles, but their profile has definitely been raised in this town.

maybe because it's good? Word-of-mouth is always the most effective type of promotion, obviously many people shared your same opinion on the quality of the food. If I ran Mary and Tito's, I'd be pretty happy about that.
Of course, if you like the nostalgia of that little neighborhood restaurant on the corner being "yours," nothing gold can stay, I'm afraid. Especially when the food rocks.
