Mannie’s is a little neighborhood diner that’s actually quite big. You’re sure to see someone you know if you eat at Mannie’s for breakfast on the weekend. People go for the pancakes, the homemade muffins, the French toast and, of course, to see and be seen. Mannie’s has a marvelous BLT with thick slabs of bacon, a nest of shredded lettuce and a generous slathering of mayo.

Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs [ Wed Jun 3 2009 11:36 AM ]

Three weeks ago I had it and it was great, but this morning... it had green gravy. Seriously, like some weird, green chicken stock gravy.

But... I think Mannie's is one of the underappreciated awesome diners in this town. Great food, old-school waitresses, and drinkable coffee.

I went this weekend [ Mon Jul 20 2009 4:35 PM ]

It was gross. We also got chicken fried steak and eggs, and it was probably the best thing we ordered. Which isn't saying much in a town that excels at chicken friend steak and eggs. Like Nick, it came with Gatorade-colored chicken gravy. Canned. Blegh.

Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's not so good. I don't think you can ever really expect high quality when you go to a diner.

Because when I was in college, the daily loblow had an annual exercise in student bad writing focused on ABQ's restaurants.
Then it was writtin about Mannys: Not the place to impress anyone ...
So I never went for a long time, and then I finally gave in late on a Sunday [which I think may be the worst day to go late anywhere].
And I took someone who did not need impressing.
and he didn't.
It was awful beyond description.
The gravy on the CFS [chic.fr'd.stk]had the taste of yesterdays refrigerator odors and was of a consistency which suggested [never mind]. The service was bad and they got the change wrong too.
There was NOTHING, either good, nor right, or correct.
It was awful.
Now when we drive past the joint we give eachother this knowing nod that bespeaks we are forever tied together in the universe, lashed by our experience of awfulness in the innocent quest for late-nite libation. We were smitten by the iron fist of retribution of out past-life sins [and sins of the future] by the experience. And we will be forever affected by the awfulness.
