I usually cite El Patio as my favorite New Mexican restaurant [ Mon Aug 9 2010 10:57 AM ]

but I had a bad experience there the other night. Though the place wasn't especially busy, our food took forever to come out. When it finally came it was cold. I assume it had been ready for a while and our waiter forgot about us. While it's no reflection on the food itself, I could only imagine how good it would have been piping hot. I guess I've learned to be a little less forgiving and trusting of waitstaff in general from this one terrible $80 visit.

The building is nothing special but the food is good, in fact it's some of my favorite New Mexican food in town. But if it were served to me cold after a long wait boy would I be pissed! I definitely would have asked for a discount at the least.
The patio is always enjoyable. Albuquerque should have more patios!

The food is fantastic - best red and green chile you can get. And the house is cool, too. Last time I was there they had little cardboard things on the tables about wanting to get a "restuarant makeover" or some such. That would be a horrible mistake. A horrible mistake. They should keep their charm and keep serving their great food, and maybe start accepting credit cards.

So many people blow this spot up, but its pretty mediocre to me. Its probably cuz my moms makes the illest mexican food which has set high standards for me. I'd say Duran's Pharmacy and Barela's Coffee House have way better red chile than El Patio. But to each their own I guess.

and the menu is insultingly overpriced. I agree with you that Barelas' red is excellent, but I wouldn't say it's better than El Patio's. How is it we can agree on Barelas but not on El Patio or Duran's?

It's booooring. I've been here all kinds because all my friends with band T-shirts love it. Their sopaipillas insult me with their wackness. Go to Los Compadres in the South Valley. I wanna take that salsa to Olive Garden before the prom, if we make it, know?

But Barelas is my overall favorite so at least we can agree on that. I also tried Mary and Tito's the other day for the first time, and boy do they pile on the chile. Good stuff.

El Patio has declined and thus I take my cash to Padilla's [ Fri Aug 20 2010 6:33 PM ]

When I moved here 9 years ago, El Patio was my favorite chile spot and whether it be because the quality of food has declined (which myself and some compatriots agree is true)or because my chile tastingskills have improved, I try to avoid it at all costs now. The location and atmosphere are wonderful, but let's face it--the food is mediocre and more often than not these days is served cold with the promise of a belly ache.
Really, I just wanted to chime in to praise the glories of Padilla's red chile and sopapillas. Oh, the flaky goodness. So, as long as you have to pull out the greens, Padilla's is pretty much whereit's at. (Duran's just may be a third runner up, behind your mom's house)
