Trombino's Bistro Italiano has been an institution of family-style Italian dining in the Heights for almost 30 years. It houses an impressively fat menu that includes a full bar, espresso drinks and an ample wine list. The service is quicker than a Hollywood marriage, and the waitstaff seems particularly knowledgeable about the food and wines. Gravitate to the more rustic Italian fare—lemon-basil chicken salad, grilled homemade Italian sausage or meatballs, prosciutto-wrapped asparagus, and manicotti are amply portioned and tasty. I finally managed to try Trombino's and it was quite good. [ Mon Jan 31 2011 2:00 PM ]

It was VERY crowded though, and the long wait for a table was punctuated by the excitement of a woman who had collapsed right outside the doorway. The menu was different than I'm used to when it comes to pasta: rather than having a long list of different pasta dishes you're invited to pick a pasta and a sauce, which I did. I had the cheese ravioli with bolgnese sauce and it was delicious, though I could have fit about 50% more of it. One of my friends got the manicotti, which was also quite good, though I preferred my own meaty sauce. Another got the goat cheese ravioli - I wasn't a fan, but she seemed pleased; it was lighter, fresher fare. The fourth person had the italian sausage plate, which looked like way too many bell peppers for my tastes, but then I really was in the mood for pasta. It was a little pricey, but excellent and I'll be back.
