Chef Noi Zaintz, formerly of Bangkok Café, opened Jasmine Thai and Sushi House last June in The 25 Way shopping center. With brightly colored walls trimmed in gold and pools of low light, Jasmine has a sort of classed-up opium den feel. There are more than 60 items, plus sushi; the menu gives an equitable amount of attention to appetizers, soups, salads, entrées and an entire page of vegetarian dishes. The service is awesome, and so are the No. 18 (spicy beef yum nuah salad), the fresh spring rolls and the pad Thai. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

  • Don't waste your time!  [ Mon Dec 12 2011 10:34 AM ]

I went to Jasmine with my partner in search of a new Thai house to replace our much beloved Lotus. We ordered Thai meat balls, Massaman Curry and Pad Thai, as these are good indicators of style/flavor.

The staff was extremely...laconic. We were not offered chop sticks, nor did we have a chance to request them. The food came almost immediately, which should have been a sign..."not made to order". The main dishes were served tepid even before the appetizer was finished.

Thai meat balls tasted like beef hotdogs. My Pad Thai was a pile of dark brown rubbery rice noodles that were mixed together with what looked like peanuts for ice cream sundae topping. The noodles were dry and in one solid clump and if you could manage to cut a bite full free, it was like chewing on a rubber ball.

The Massaman curry tasted like someone else's leftovers. Had it been on the stove all day... maybe a few days? It tasted like someone just added more ingredients to it over time. The peanuts were uncooked and the potatoes were completely falling apart, which made the sauce gritty. Abhorrent!

Sadly, the after taste of each was worse than the initial flavor! I hate wasting food, but I couldn't even take the leftovers home. A waste of $30!

  • Chopsticks aren't Thai...  [ Mon Dec 12 2011 4:38 PM ]

Jasmine is one of the few Thai places in town I haven't tried, but the presence/absence of chopsticks isn't a very good way to judge authenticity or service at a Thai restaurant. They're not common utensils in Thailand, where folks mostly use spoons and forks. Thai restaurants in the US keep them on hand because Americans who don't know better expect them as part of the "Asian Restaurant" experience...
