The ambience of the tiny, second Pupuseria y Restaurant Salvadoreño location is like a small beachside cabana. The cinderblock walls are covered with neon beach towels, paper palm trees lurk in the corners and salsa music blares. In addition to a deep line of
pupusas
(thick little cornmeal cakes filled with
chicharrón
, fish, chicken, beef, ham and cheese, carne asada, beans, cheese, or calabacitas), the menu includes an assortment of dishes from way south of the border. Plain
pupusas
come with most meals and are eaten with a mild tomato sauce and a side salad called
curtido,
a sort of Salvadoran sauerkraut. The fried tilapia is large, with a golden exterior and thick flesh. Fish soup (
caldo de pescado
, also available with shrimp) has a touch of sour cream and delivers a whole-body satisfaction akin to a fish coconut curry. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010) Community Reviews |
