Las Islitas stakes its claim on just one noble pursuit—the seafood-heavy cuisine of Mexico’s Central Pacific state of Nayarit. The food is simple, delicious and authentic, having clearly evolved in a place where the raw ingredients are good and fresh. No culinary tap-dancing is necessary. Brothy, aromatic soups and fish-filled empanadas are a few must-haves, and even the unsavory sounding dishes such as camarones a la cucaracha (“cockroach” shrimp) are surprisingly delicious.
