Winner of Best Casual Dining, Best Veggie Burger, Best Toast, Best Healthy Breakfast and Best Desserts in our restaurant polls. Sure, you go in thinking you’ll be good and get a skinny latte, scrambled egg whites and a side of turkey and green chile sausage, but five minutes later somebody’s saying “eclair” and the voice is coming from your mouth. But, boy, do they taste good. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

There’s plenty of vegetable-based and vegetarian choices—golden lentil soup is a standout, and don’t pass on the paneer dishes. For meat eaters, the goat curry (made with local, kosher meat) is as decadent as any dish you’ll find anywhere, served in a brown gravy that’s full of disintegrated potatoes and the occasional green fleck of fresh herbs. Mmmm ... goat gravy. (Alibi Staff, June 21, 2012)

Albuquerque - Downtown

Al’s Big Dipper

www.alsbigdipper.com

4.88 rating (13 votes)
Al’s has moved from the old Relish space downtown to a spot inside the Main Library on Copper, but still serves a hefty menu of inspired hot and cold sandwiches. There’s an emphasis on homemade touches, from the sweet onion jam on the roast beef sandwich to the cookie that comes with every order. Good salads, daily made-from-scratch soups and a new sandwich special every day keep the lunch crowd on its toes. (Alibi Staff, November 4, 2010)

3.89 rating (47 votes)
The old home of Pearl's Dive has a new lease on life. Brainchild of local band The Dirty Novels, the Blackbird has been appropriately rock ’n’ rolled with excellent music, black-clad waitresses and a cool look. There are an impressive number of draft and bottled beers, and a few nice wines by the glass, which are fan-freaking-tastic on the back patio. By the way, "buvette" (boo-vet) is a loose French translation for "refreshment bar." Now you’re really in the know.

This cute, Italian-styled café is tucked between Gold Street Caffé and Café Miche in one of Downtown’s most desirable dining districts . The rest of the place follows suit with bello hand-pressed espresso (tea, too), panini and other Euro-centric treats. (Alibi Staff, July 12, 2011)

Winner of Best Casual Dining, Best Veggie Burger, Best Toast, Best Healthy Breakfast and Best Desserts in our 2008 restaurant poll. Gold Street was cool before Downtown was cool, but now that Downtown is cool, Gold Street is even cooler. Open for breakfast and lunch (and now dinner service on the weekends!), this charming café has pet-friendly sidewalk seating and serves up a menu of homey breakfast favorites like waffles and sophisticated lunches. It shouldn’t surprise you that the place with the Best Bacon in our restaurant poll also makes a memorable BLT. If you’re really lucky, they’ll have freshly baked cupcakes or a slice of flourless chocolate cake waiting for dessert. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Gravy

725 Central Ave NE (Downtown)
Albuquerque NM
242-4299
Cuisine: American, Diner

5 rating (1 vote)
After two years of preparation, Gravy has finally opened in the old Milton’s building. The place looks great, with a distinctly swank take on the classic diner aesthetic, and the menu follows suit. Multiple varieties of pancakes are offered for breakfast, along with huevos rancheros and an eggy pot pie. Dinner is comfort food-oriented—think meatloaf, fried chicken and chicken fried steak—and there’s plenty of beer (locally brewed and otherwise) on tap with which to wash it down. (Alibi Staff, December 17, 2014)

The Grove Café & Market

600 Central Ave SE (Downtown)
Albuquerque NM
(505) 248-9800

3.85 rating (43 votes)
This ray of sunshine in Huning Highland serves gourmet breakfast and lunch, sells house-made English muffins, and has a mini-shop filled with goodies like honey, jams, mustards and vinegars, not to mention non-edibles like cook books, serving vessels and cards. A tiny wine list is just as chic—five reds and five whites are marked on a chalkboard, and all are constantly changing. This list is extremely well thought-out and offers a sampling of some of the most esoteric varietals and brands available in Albuquerque. There’s also a large, shaded patio, incredible house-made cupcakes and too-cute French macarons.

Their menu changes weekly, but Hartford Square always features high quality, locally-sourced food with both eat-in and take-out options. Salads are well stocked with fresh, seasonal ingredients and there are always a few hot options like Canadian salmon or ratatouille pot pie. If you’re early enough, you’ll get first crack at the crossword in the house copy of the New York Times. (Alibi Staff, September 12, 2013)

Java Joe’s

906 Park Ave SW (Downtown)
Albuquerque NM
(505) 765-1514
www.downtownjavajoes.com
Mon-Sun: 6:30am-3:30pm (hours can change without notice)
Meals Served: BreakfastLunch

3.7 rating (20 votes)
According to one of our readers, Java Joe’s is “the last of a dying breed.” There are indeed “few choices left to get that cool Haight-Ashbury ’60s feeling.” Don’t get the wrong idea, though, this neighborhood coffee shop isn’t overflowing with hippies. It attracts a diverse crowd of cyclists, artists, musicians, hipsters and grownups just looking for a cuppa joe (albeit one with in-house roasted beans). The food is simple and satisfying, from freshly baked scones to waffles, burritos, sandwiches and salads, and the sidewalk seating is definitely for the dogs. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Get your late-night pizza fix and a pint on Downtown’s favorite patio. It makes a perfect vantage point for people-watching until 2:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday. (Alibi Staff, August 11, 2010)

Le Café Miche

228 Gold Ave SW (Downtown)
Albuquerque NM
(505) 314-1111
www.lecafemiche.com
Mon-Tue: 11 am- 5 pm Wed-Sat: 11 am- 9 pm (hours can change without notice)
Meals Served: BrunchLunchDinner
Cuisine: Dessert, French

3 rating (2 votes)
Claus and Linda Hjortkjaer have resurrected Le Café Miche in the space formerly occupied by P'tit Louis Bistro at Third and Gold. The menu is a contemporary take on Hjortkjaer's well-known mélange of French and his native Danish cuisine. Don't miss his house-made Rygeost cheese served on rugbrod (pumpernickel) with sliced leeks and radish. There is limited outdoor seating, weather permitting. (Alibi Staff, September 12, 2013)
