Albuquerque’s local calligrapher’s guild, Escribiente, is celebrating its 40th birthday with an exhibition opening this Friday, April 6 at Matrix Fine Art (3812 Central Ave. SE). The collected works, Enchanted Calligraphy, showcases the diversity of styles and techniques that hand letterers can create, with a particular eye on the many, many calligraphers at work in New Mexico. The letter forms are applied to a variety of media as well—some 2D, some 3D, and even some mixed media works. In addition to an opening reception from 5 to 8pm on Friday (part of an epic First Friday happening this month), there is an artists talk with several Escribiente members happening the next day, Saturday, April 14, from 1 to 3pm.

“The strange atmosphere that is becoming ordinary life for Americans at large and New Mexicans in particular, finds itself the subject of toasting and roasting, from the prevalence of identity theft to the new face of television, the extreme pleasure for green chile to the abundance of Albuquerque breweries, and so, so much more,” Blackout Theatre says of their upcoming production, The 49th Best Sketch Show, a work of satire that has a lot of material to work with—taking aim at local happenings as well as those on a national stage. The show opens on Friday, April 6 at 8pm, and continues through April 14. The Sunday matinee at 1pm on April 8 is supremely special with brunch included. This run of The 49th Best Sketch Show is staged at Trickock Performance Lab (110 Gold Ave. SW). Tickets and more information are live at blackouttheatre.com.
