Art From the Heart

The New Mexico Humanities Council is playing host to a juried art exhibit curated by the New Mexico African American Arts Guild; it opens Jan. 10 and closes March 29, and we solidly recommend you go. The exhibition, entitled Matters of the Heart: Black Art Speaks, is a moving collection of pieces by artists of African descent, exploring a complex range of expressions, including works by award-winning artists Kenneth Winfrey, Edna McIver, Karen Jones Meadows and Doris Fields. More information available at nmhum.org.

Comedy for a Cause

Kaatje Gotcha

Albuquerque comedian Kaatje Gotcha is arguably the bravest woman in Albuquerque. A former stuntwoman, she became paralyzed after her parachute failed to open during a jump from a plane, and this led to her new life as a wheelchair-bound comedian living with constant pain. This weekend, Gotcha and friends (comedians Curt Fletcher, Kris Shaw, Adam James, Celeste Garcia and Alan Charlee) are holding a couple of comedy fundraisers to help her buy a new wheelchair pillow. Friday, Jan. 11 at Boiler Monkey Bistro; and Saturday Jan. 12, at Moonlight Lounge. Both shows start at 6:30pm.
