SXSW Scrapbook: Part Un

Amature Photogs Give it a Go

Monotonix singer Ami Shalev unpacks unorthodox histrionics from Tel Aviv, Israel. Their taste is puro classic rock, but the way they maneuver it is surprising: acrobatic and let's-be-best-friends upbeat.

Monotonix’ drummer, deconstructed and airborn, at the Typewriter Museum (the same backyard that hosts Fuck by Fuck You.) A powerline hovers behind his head, while a live goat (not pictured) looks on from a pen at my right elbow.

Burque’s Bud Melvin, the only New Mexico representative at an official SXSW showcase, draws a dancy crowd at the Molotov Lounge. His topic of onstage banter: “I’m here to get signed, bitches!”

A pic of a pic of Bud Melvin. Cliché, yes, but I’m trying to show you his excellent 10-gallon hat and curly mustache. Melvin is also a member of The Grave of Nobody’s Darling, Lionhead Bunny, Lowlights and cobra//group, all of which regularly perform in Albuquerque.

Ani Cordero is the drummer for Pistolera and a songwriting genius with an enviable set list. She performed alone due to some travel problems. Usually, she and a full band go under Cordero.

You cannot fight the hookable, hilarious cheesecake nature of Screamin Cyn Cyn and the Pons. Cyn Cyn (Cynthia) is in the dress. Shane is wearing the grandma wrap shirt, the sheer stockings, the droopy thigh-high stripper boots, the cup and the side head bow.

Cyn Cyn has to know how awesome she looks when she wails and kneels on dirty bar room floors wearing ancient prom gear.

L.A. noise-rockers HEALTH act out a scene from my hangover at Volume Nightclub. Under non-SXSW circumstances, this place appears to be an Austin booty cave of neon-washed dance cages. Now there are four boys doing unknowably avant things with their entire bodies, and it still smells like Southern Comfort and Axe body spray.

HEALTH from above. These guys really blew up at SXSW this year. They had tons of showcases and played the Village Voice party. Two years ago I saw them in the basement of the Exxon house on a Wednesday or something. There were four people there. The moral of the story is not that I am cool, but rather that you should go to more weekday shows. For serious. You missed Extra Life last night.
