Dance Dance Resolution to Obesity

America’s fat. We know it. Only now, our nation’s obesity problem has some states and school districts looking for a solution. Some states have decided to combat obesity by requiring more physical education classes; Gov. Bill Richardson’s plan, announced this last November, is to cut junk food in school cafeterias. But West Virginia has found another solution: Making students exercise without them knowing it. They’re not talking hypnosis, or PE (torture); they’re talking Dance Dance Revolution (DDR). Announced last month, the popular video game will be in every West Virginia public school within two years [link]. In DDR, the object of the game is to follow a sequence of steps to a piece of American or cute Japanese pop music. There is even a workout mode including a calorie counter and a pedometer. Finally, weight loss that comes in a box.
