You already know about the Town of Lights’ coal mining past, but visiting the Madrid Old Coal Town Museum (2846 Hwy. 14, Madrid) beginning May 1 will net you a handful of new exhibitions further exploring Madrid’s soot-covered history. The museum has been hard at work installing exhibits on the Chicago White Sox-connected Madrid Miners Baseball Team, the city’s Christmas lights and how they inspired Walt Disney himself, and the background of Madrid’s lighted ballpark —the very first west of the Mississippi River. Admission is $5, or $3 for seniors and children. The museum is open each day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. including weekends. For more, call 438-3780 or visit bit.ly/oldcoalmuseum.
