Tomorrow this nation celebrates the birth, life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Beginning this auspicious day on a unifying, reverential and thoughtful note can set the mood for our national journey of understanding and further promote the work of King, an American visionary whose life was cut short by an assassin’s bullet in 1968. This year’s 18th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. commemorative breakfast will do just that.
Beginning promptly at 8am at the Marriott Pyramid North (5151 San Francisco NE), the breakfast meeting will feature emcee Pamelya Herndon, executive director of the Southwest Women’s Law Center. Vincent Baty, a renowned local musician and producer, will direct a men’s choir chosen especially for this event. This year’s guest speaker is Rev. Dr. Kevin R. Johnson, fifth pastor of Bright Hope Baptist Church in Philadelphia. Johnson will speak on keeping King’s legacy alive through community empowerment and economic development. Tickets for the breakfast are available by calling Galvin Brown at 550-3749; the cost is a $30 donation for adults, $20 for students or a table of 10 for $300.
