Never Grow Up: Cool Kids Never Die opening reception
Ancient peoples painted bison on cave walls, and why? Because bison were the most damn interesting thing around. Fast-forward 35 millennia and not much has changed when it comes to choosing subject matter. More than 40 artists raised on a steady diet of Saturday morning cartoons in the ’80s and ’90s have finally found an outlet for their obsessions in Cool Kids Never Die.
Debuting at Downtown Contemporary Gallery (105 Fourth Street SW) this Friday, the exhibit features work from local illustrators, painters, screen printers and airbrush artists. Nostalgia aficionados will find a hefty dose of He-Man, She-Ra, Batman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Animaniacs, Jem and the Holograms, Smurfs and more. If you can remember it, someone has probably painted it on a canvas or worked it into an Adventure Time mashup. Your best bet is to hit the 6pm opening reception on March 13, where you’ll be treated to snacks, drinks, face painting by Sean Wells and music from DJ Cali 5. The Girls of Geek will be there in costume, assuming they can squeeze into the gallery’s narrow halls. The show stays up until Apr. 10 and can be seen by appointment; visit downtowncontemporary.
