History's Overlooked Spaces
Saturday, Oct 10: Outhouses: Underrated Icons of New Mexico History
In a world of convenience, it's easy to overlook the most essential of spaces. This Saturday, Oct. 10, at Casa San Ysidro in Corrales, Dr. Richard Melzer of UNM's Valencia campus will discuss the historical contexts of a space with a great deal of utility—the bathroom.
In Outhouses: Underrated Icons of New Mexico, the history professor examines the role of these structures in the development of modern New Mexico and the innovative ways in which society dealt with the nagging, age-old problem of sanitation in the face of expansion. This free event will begin at 1:30pm and will showcase images of both the most unusual and the most ordinary. Preceding and following the talk, the historic home will be open for self-guided tours for curious patrons.
