Tuesday, Feb 2: George Winston • piano, jazz
Stylistically atypical yet interestingly informed solo pianist George Winston will be playing two shows at the Outpost Performance Space, courtesy of AMP Concerts, on Tuesday, Feb. 2, and Wednesday, Feb. 3. Known for a telegraphic yet haunting style that demonstrates influences from organ music to the musical traditions of New Orleans, Winston self-describes his self-taught approach to instrumentality as "rural folk piano," though critics have long noted the artist's connection to "New Age Music," pointing to Winston's association with the Windham Hill recording label during the 1980s. More precisely, the pianist uses uptempo stride and New Orleans style R&B playing to imbue his performances with an atmosphere that is tantalizingly tranquil, intensely introspective and passionate.
Winston's a philanthropist of note too; proceeds from merchandise sales at his concerts generally go to local food banks and his latest album, Spring Carousel — A Cancer Research Benefit, is directed toward producing funds for medical and clinical research into the dread disease. Tickets for Winston's sojourn into the sonic sublime are $53 in advance and $58 the day of the show. Each night, the magic music begins at 7:30pm.
