590 - Khosrau II is crowned king of Persia.

1564 - Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei was born in Pisa.

1637 – Ferdinand III becomes Holy Roman Emperor.

1898 – The USS Maine explodes and sinks in Havana harbor, killing more than 260. This event leads the United States to declare war on Spain.

1933 – In Miami, Florida, Giuseppe Zangara attempts to assassinate President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt, but instead shoots Chicago, Illinois Mayor Cermak, who dies on March 6. Zangara is executed four weeks later. Talk about swift justice, he’ll make a believer out of you.

1942 - the British colony Singapore surrendered to the Japanese during World War II.

1954- Matthew Abram "Matt" Groening born.

1961 - 73 people, including an 18-member US figure skating team en route to Czechoslovakia, were killed in the crash of a Sabena Airlines Boeing 707 in Belgium.

1965- Nat King Cole dies.

1984 – Ethel Merman dies.

2005 - Defrocked priest Paul Shanley was sentenced in Boston to 12 to 15 years in prison on child rape charges.
