Strikeforce Houston was proof that betting on the favorites isn't always a sure thing. Both Bobby Lashley and Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal got their first tastes of defeat despite the odds.

Lashley stuck to the game plan with strong takedowns and ground and pound, and won the majority of the bout. But his opponent Chad Griggs had the toughness to remain in the fight and gave Lashley some punishment of his own at the end of round two. When the round ended, he stated he couldn't continue and was rushed to the hospital. He may have shown major flaws in his ability, but to label him a failure is premature.

King Mo defended his title against Feijao Cavalcante, and it was supposed to be showcase of Lawal skills. Instead, it was a nightmare. Round one was closely contested, but Lawal gained control in round two and seemed to put the momentum on his side. When round three began, Cavalcante unleashed his dangerous striking and impressively finished Lawal.

Strikeforce invested heavily into the former champion, but Lawal's loss may be Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker's gain; the defeat creates new matchups for a weak light heavyweight division. Lawal's future is up to him—a first loss can either help or destroy a fighter's career.

The card also featured Ronaldo Jacare Souza capturing the vacant middleweight title over Tim Kennedy and an exciting lightweight bout between KJ Noons and Jorge Gurgel. Even though Noons captured a convincing victory, the win was marred in controversy from borderline illegal strikes. Now Noons can either chose to fight Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz or face Gilbert Melendez for the lightweight title.

NFL Preseason

His royal highness Brett Favre finally made his preseason debut against the San Francisco 49ers. After all the coverage ESPN gave the 40-year-old, he could have at least played the majority of the first quarter.

Favre completed one pass but took a stomach-turning hit from Patrick Wills that was sure to make Viking fans’ Super Bowl hopes flash before their eyes. The Vikings have every team in the NFC gunning for them with Favre looking for redemption from his interception against the New Orleans Saints.

Lets not forget their was a football game played, with 49ers quarterback Alex Smith forcing the NFL take notice by completing nine of 13 passes in the first half. Winning the game 15-10 was added bonus for the 49ers, who are hoping to be the surprise story of the NFL but only if Alex Smith can prevent turnovers and avoid getting injured.
