What Did You Play This Weekend?

He is so going to die.
He is so going to die.

"Fuck this fucking GAME!" That was my old roommate, Jeff. The year was 1998, and several hours of minor victories punctuated by repeated brutal death in Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee had just come to a jarring halt. Considering how roughly it was treating him, I never gave the game a chance. At the time, I was having enough trouble combating motion sickness in Thief: The Dark Project, and any more rage just wouldn't have been healthy. Fast forward 12 years, and I see it on Steam for $1.25. How can you resist something like that? Me, I could not. So far, though, it's turning out to be a good decision. The game has aged very well, and even though it's a bit of an ass kicking, the great art direction and the if-I-try-just-one-more-time compulsive gameplay have kept me coming back over and over. I've put about 6 hours into the first 1/4 of the game, and it's been worth every lovely/enraging minute.

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee got 3 sequels: Abe's Exoddus (1998), Munch's Oddysee (2001), and Stranger's Wrath (2005). The whole franchise seemed to peter out after Stranger's Wrath, but recently things have started to heat up again. Just last week, it was announced that multiple new Oddworld titles are in the works. Also, someone posting as Abe on Twitter has begun dropping hints about the games, so hopefully we'll hear something more substantial soon.
