The number of medical cannabis users in New Mexico has again sharply risen. Since last year an increase of nearly 50 percent of patients with medical marijuana cards takes the total number in New Mexico to more than 50,000. Most of the growth is led by two main categories: PTSD and chronic pain; although prescriptions for hospice patients also saw a dramatic increase. The state recently halved the size of the application for the medical cannabis program which can now be completed electronically. Additionally, New Mexico is part of a small national vanguard which is exploring the use of cannabis to combat the opioid addiction epidemic.
