Oda a la Fuente Opening Reception
New works by multimedia and place-specific artist Joanna Keane Lopez. Runs through 11/27.
On Thursday, November 20th, 23-year old Joanna Keane Lopez, a multi-media and place-specific artist who integrates traditional New Mexico materials into her work, will give a talk about her current project, Oda a la Fuente, (Ode to Source) during the opening night of her exhibition, Thursday, November 20th from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the John Summers Gallery on UNM Campus.
The exhibition runs from November 17th to the 27th.
“Oda a la Fuente” casts light on her Hispano heritage that dates back to the 17th century by exploring the traditional artistic practices of New Mexican communities in the southwestern region and how they are connected to the natural environment. Her large-scale, illuminated sculptural homes are made from natural southwestern dyes, churro sheep wool, adobe mud, aliz and willow branches.
Joanna is a Senior at the University of New Mexico. She is an Honor Student working on a Bachelors of Arts in Art Studio with a second major in Spanish. She has also been a part of the New Mexico Musical Heritage Project at UNM constructing violins and learning traditional New Mexican music.
