Indigenous Fine Art Market Holiday Showcase

Down to a Fine Art

Amidst a seasonal glut of craft shows and art bazaars, the Indigenous Fine Art Market’s Holiday Showcase stands out. Beginning Saturday, Nov. 29, and continuing on Sunday, IFAM presents 50 distinguished artists divided into six gallery-style spaces at Hotel Andaluz (125 Second Street NW) from 9am to 5pm. A word of caution—or rather, of reasonable expectations: Bargain-bin baubles these are not. IFAM’s Holiday Showcase features a gilded class of top-notch jewelers, painters, photographers and sculptors, the kind who might put “inquire” on their websites in lieu of actual prices. So carry some coin. Althea Cajero, from Santo Domingo and Acoma Pueblos, brings a signature balance of texture and form to her line of rings, bracelets and other exquisite jewelry. Gilmore Scott is a Navajo painter whose flamboyant blanket-inspired landscapes will sear their lush primary colors directly into your eyeballs. Photographer Zoe Marieh Urness, a Tlingit Alaskan Native, offers striking photographs of contemporary Native Americans in traditional garb and environments. In other words, there will be plenty to drool over. The show costs $10 per day or $15 for a weekend pass. There’s also a Champagne Party and Silent Auction to benefit IFAM on Saturday night; that fancy-pants affair will run you $50. For more info and tickets, visit indigefam.org. (Lisa Barrow)
