Steeped In Art
Sipping for Synesthetes
Thinking it’s time to cultivate your taste for contemporary abstract art? This weekend, wash down morsels of mouthwatering color and form with a selection of gourmet teas during Steeped In Art at Pippin Contemporary (200 Canyon Rd. in Santa Fe). Ponder the strands of connection between Imperial Grade Sencha, described as “intense” and “full-bodied,” and one of gallery owner Aleta Pippin’s oils with its characteristic wedges of paint looming against color-dappled mist. Cody Hooper’s dreamlike, electrical storm clouds in “Translucent Memories,” pictured, will hover in concert with the “bold yet beautifully balanced” Yuzu Kukicha blend. And Stephanie Paige’s pairing with the “very relaxing” Roasted Kukicha may in fact be revelatory, since her mixed-media horizons unfold like scenic vistas paused mid-apocalypse. With six artists to be considered in all on Saturday, March 21, from 2 to 4pm, this free afternoon tasting promises to attune sippers’ senses to the shared pleasures of art, conversation and sustenance, courtesy of The Teahouse and the Santa Fe Gallery Association’s Art Matters series. An art and tea pairing where different gourmet teas are matched with an artist's body of work.
Pippin Contemporary is collaborating with The Teahouse for an Art Matters event as part of the “Sustenance” event series on how food, conversation and art nourish the mind, body, and soul. At Pippin Contemporary we will host an art and tea pairing where different gourmet teas from the Teahouse will be matched with an artist’s body of work based on the tea’s richness, flavor, boldness, and energy. Event attendees will then have the opportunity to taste a variety of teas while contemplating the defining qualities it shares with contemporary paintings.
Aleta Pippin, Cody Hooper, Stephanie Paige, Tony Griffith, Michael Monroe Ethridge, and Kevin Robb will have their body of work paired with a tea based on painting style, artistic inspiration, and emotions evoked from the work. These pairings are as follows:
Aleta Pippin: Imperial Grade Sencha (Japanese) – Grown at high elevation under meticulous conditions; a strong, full-bodied cup with intense flavor.
Stephanie Paige: Roasted Kukicha (Japanese) – Roasted tea twigs and stems that make it smooth and nutty, this tea is light in caffeine and very relaxing.
Cody Hooper: Yuzu Kukicha (Japanese) – this rare blend of Kukicha, Matcha, and Yuzu is bold yet beautifully balanced.
Michael Monroe Ethridge: Guava Citrus (Chinese) – Unique, sweet, tropical flavor of guava & fresh citrus.
Tony Griffith: Freak of Nature Oolong (Chinese) – This rare and extraordinary tea is grown at very high elevation with large daily temperature fluctuation creating a tea with a truly unique aroma and flavor.
Kevin Robb: Himalayan Snowflake (Indian) – For a remarkable person and artist, one of the world’s remarkable teas. Made just from the hand-picked tips of organic leaves.
Join us to be “Steeped in Art” and decide which teas and artists are most complimentary to your taste and style!
